SD custom shop one off pickups.

My first pair of SD custom shop pickups should be here anyday. I was wondering, if you had SD custom shop design pickups for you, what did you have them build and did they meet expectations?

Re: SD custom shop one off pickups.

Welcome to the forum!

I did! They built a 59/Custom Hybrid with double screws, a roughcast magnet, and a flipped magnet. It continues to be brilliant.

Re: SD custom shop one off pickups.

I had Custom Shop Quarter Pounds made. Glossy black top for the neck (12.8K calibrated degaussed magnets), and glossy cream for middle (overwound 5% to 14.8k). They're normally 13.4k and only done in matte black on Forbon fiber flatwork instead of the glossy plastic tops. I chose no logo on the cream. They're just what I wanted and sound great. Re: SD custom shop one off pickups.

ive had them do a few. a 10k antiquity humbucker with a full strength a2 magnet was the first i can recall and its a magical pup. ive had a 17k c5, 9.4k antiquity humbucker, qp single coil p bass stack, two tapped a2 strat pups, and an a5 tele pup that i can remember. everything ive had made was a terrific pup.

I had them make me a Stra-Bro-90 on a Telecaster bridge baseplate, with a tapped coil. I love it, it's my favorite pickup in a Tele so far.

Re: SD custom shop one off pickups.

is the tap in the middle like the normal strabro90? i had my tapped strat pups at 6.5k/9.5k with #42 pe. great sounding pup but i like the strabro90 trio i have as well

Re: SD custom shop one off pickups.

I had a 9k A2 wound years ago and it turned out great. I don't remember much of what I asked for, other than a hotter than normal APH.

More recently I ordered a set of Greenies from the Custom Shop. I asked MJ to add a little bit of scatter wind to the normal formula and asked her to make sure the neck pickup had good clarity. No wax potting either. She delivered in spades. I honestly don't use the middle out of phase position, even though it's kind of cool. What's wonderful about this set of pickups is they are one of the best PAF sounding pickups I've ever heard. Perfect crunchy bridge tones and a killer sweet neck position. They have an aura of sparkle and the note separation is so good. I really love them.

I currently have them in my Gary Moore LP Standard, but they don't fit there as well. They're going back into my favorite USA Dean Hardtail. They match that guitar perfectly. Perfectly.

Even though SD is a big company now, the custom shop is still the very essence of what this company was founded on.... making great sounding pickups. You can just tell MJ that you want a set of pickups to sound like Paul Kossoff from Free in 1973 and you're playing a Les Paul.... and she'll nail it. Or, if you have a sound in your head and can describe it, she can build it.

Honestly, I wish I'd come up to Seymour Duncan in 1989 when I was living in San Diego and begged him to give me a job winding pickups. What a trip the last 30 years would have been.

It's pretty close, 17.11k full power, 8.06k tapped

Re: SD custom shop one off pickups.

I've had a Full Shred Pair made with Ceramic magnets (triple in the bridge), in White with black bases for a guitar I'm building.
