Re: SD custom shop one off pickups.
I had a 9k A2 wound years ago and it turned out great. I don't remember much of what I asked for, other than a hotter than normal APH.
More recently I ordered a set of Greenies from the Custom Shop. I asked MJ to add a little bit of scatter wind to the normal formula and asked her to make sure the neck pickup had good clarity. No wax potting either. She delivered in spades. I honestly don't use the middle out of phase position, even though it's kind of cool. What's wonderful about this set of pickups is they are one of the best PAF sounding pickups I've ever heard. Perfect crunchy bridge tones and a killer sweet neck position. They have an aura of sparkle and the note separation is so good. I really love them.
I currently have them in my Gary Moore LP Standard, but they don't fit there as well. They're going back into my favorite USA Dean Hardtail. They match that guitar perfectly. Perfectly.
Even though SD is a big company now, the custom shop is still the very essence of what this company was founded on.... making great sounding pickups. You can just tell MJ that you want a set of pickups to sound like Paul Kossoff from Free in 1973 and you're playing a Les Paul.... and she'll nail it. Or, if you have a sound in your head and can describe it, she can build it.
Honestly, I wish I'd come up to Seymour Duncan in 1989 when I was living in San Diego and begged him to give me a job winding pickups. What a trip the last 30 years would have been.
