SD equivalent of DM Super Distortion?

I'm sure this has been done to death, but -

What's the SD equivalent of a DM Super Distortion?

I'm assuming it's the Distortion, but just thought I'd check to make sure. I thought it might be the JB.

OK, I just read another post that complains about this type of question, specifically the wording.

So what would be the closest SD to a Super Distortion in terms of output and tone?
 
i dont think there is one. the sd is a great sounding pup and i dont think duncan has anything that sounds quite the same. the duncan distortion is also a great pup, but has a different tone
 
the wind, the baseplate, the thick ceramic mag, and allen poles all contribute to it being its own thing
 
I think the SuperD is such an established standard that there's little demand for an equivalent.
From any brand, especially Duncan which is happily and proudly un-DiMarzio-like.
Plus, SuperDs are ubiquitous - anybody who wants that sound can get one cheap.
 
Yeah, just buy the SuperD if that's what you're after. I managed to get my Duncan Custom/Jazz set to cover those tones. But Ace and I both know I'm coming up a little bit short. :cool:
 
I am somewhat an aficionado of the SuperD, for obvious reasons, obviously. I am also primarily a Duncan user.

There really is no Duncan similar to a Super D. It would seem that the Distortion is the obvious comparison, but it is not.
- Hotness: Distortion > SuperD
- Treble: Distortion > SuperD
- Mids: Distortion sightly > SuperD
- Bass: SuperD > Distortion
- Thickness overall: SuperD > Distortion
- Tightness overall: Distortion > SuperD
- Iron Maiden: SuperD > Distortion
- Judas Priest: Distortion > SuperD
- Cleans: Neither is epic, both are better than you you would think, Distortion is Sterile/Cold, SuperD is Gritty/Hairy

Both Rock balls-to-the-wall. Get a Super D. Everyone needs one.

The Invader is maybe the closest "kind" thing to a SuperD, but it isn't actually close.
 
I've owned the super distortion myself. It was the first after market pickup I'd ever played (20+ yrs ago).

The Duncan Custom isnt identical to the SD, but to my ears, its the closest Duncan equivalent. The Super Distortion is *richer* and isnt quite as scooped. I like both pickups a lot.
 
SD doesn't have anything just like the Super Distortion. The Super Distortions have a certain "aggressive, yet also juicy, yet also clear" thing that I've never heard another pickup nail just right. They are the highest output pickup I use; all others I've tried at that output level or above lose their clarity and their "bluesiness." The Super D somehow feels aggressive, but without losing the ability to do classic '60s-eqsue tones.
