SD Hotrails

Hi, everyone
1. I am wondering if the hot rails are good for old maiden tones like the 80s stuff?
2. I am also wondering if the hot rails cut though the mix when playing live especially on a solo?
Cause dave murray out of maiden doesn't cut though Adrian's guitar sound when Dave's playing a solo this happened since 2000-2009. I can hear him sometimes but not many.
3. Does anyone know why this is i was wondering if it was the pickups or not?

Thanks

Re: SD Hotrails

Doesn't cut through on what? I never noticed Dave being lost in the mix recently, not on recordings, DVDs, or when I saw them live.

Don't forget there's THREE guitarist's in Maiden these days (alledgedly).

Re: SD Hotrails

The best pup for the older Maiden stuff is the full sized super distortion. It is what they used and Adrian still uses. If you dont have a humbucker route, Dimarzio make a rail style pickup that is meant to be close to the normal super distortion.

Re: SD Hotrails

ya, cutting through the mix has more to do with EQ/amps/speakers and such than the specific pickup. doesn't the iron maiden strat have 3 hot rails? when i wielded a HR with my band it cut through... just wasn't that sensitive to picking style. but the sound was pretty massive.

Re: SD Hotrails

okay thanks everyone, so it is just that adrian is louder than dave and janick or it is just youtube, its nothing to do with the pickups?
1. I am looking at the dimarzio super distortion rails how would you compare them to the hotrails?
2. I like the sd hotrails for there rthym sound, the amount of crunch they have. do the dimarzio super distortion s rails have a nice crunch

Re: SD Hotrails

thanks Alex1fly, so it has more to do with the amp, eq settings thanks.. so what settings on a eq do you recommend for cutting though on solos? .. i have a boss ge7

Re: SD Hotrails

In order to cut through you should have as much mids and as little gain as you can take. Volume or volume pedals don't really help in it, you just need a healthy overall sound.

Re: SD Hotrails

thanks,
1.so a lot of mids is what the hot rails have?
2. what do you mean about little gain because i play heavy metal and that contains quite a lot of gain?

The HR does have a lot of low mids, a high mid boost doesn't hurt if you have an EQ pedal.

I think it has to do with distortion creating more and more overtones until the actual note you are playing choked down by its own harmonics.

Re: SD Hotrails

YouTube is not a good place to judge quality of tone.

Usually most people will bump their mids (about the 1K area) slightly for solos, just enough to separate them from the rhythm guitar and cymbals so each note cuts through.

Be aware if you're soloing with a Wah pedal, you don't want a 1K eq boost aside from it, as the typical Wah is centered around the 1KHz frequency point, so you'll end up double-boosting the most annoying frequency in the spectrum.

I'll be able to answer these questions soon! Check my other thread.

Re: SD Hotrails

i will go with the hot rails then... i am going to get 2 hotrails in the bridge and neck and a cool rails in the middle is this a good combo?
