SD Lipstick pickups on my Strat

Hi,

i've just picked up a CS '65 "Lipstick" Strat fitted with 3 x lipsticks (kinda obvious that), apparently it's one of 60 comissioned for the Frankfurt guitar show 2004.

According to Fender it's fitted with Custom Seymour Duncan Lipsticks.

Can anyone help me get any info on these pickups, i'm just wondering whether they are truly "custom" or the stock lipstick that SD supplies.

If thay are custom i'd like to try and get the specs on them if possible

This is the Baby....

Anyone know if i can or how to get info on the SD pups fitted to this guitar,
i've trawled the SD site but can't find a way to contact them directly.

Cheers

Beauty!

I think you can PM Evan, and/or give 'em a call. Just hit the "S" on the top left and go from there. That is one nice looking guitar.

Re: SD Lipstick pickups on my Strat

Ive always wondered how a strat fitted with Lipsticks sounded... thats 1 perty guitar. How does it sound?

Re: SD Lipstick pickups on my Strat

Thanks for the info...

The guitar sounds amazing, suprisingly versatile.

It appears to be based on SRV's "Charley" which prompted my interest when i saw it.
the tones on SRV's "Life without you" and "Tin Pan Alley" were what i was lookin for
and i wasn't disappointed, just wish i could play like the great man!!

It's still quite new to me so i'm still sussing out the full capabilties.
The bridge pup is amazing, it could strip paint without being harsh
There's so much range in the sound's that to be honest my heads spinning at the moment, so probably it would be better for me to givit a while before i can give a decent appraisal, sometime i here Tele, sometimes a bit of Ricky but all with the Strat
heartbeat, it's weird and i'm ramblin'.

Suffice to say i like it.... loads

Oh man!! ,

I can't believe how long i spent on the SD website and didn't see the "contact us" link at the bottom of the page, i must need sleep or summat!!

I've now sent a request for info, hopefully i will get a reply.

Re: SD Lipstick pickups on my Strat

Ok, i emailed SD but i haven't had a reply as yet.

Since then i've had a look under the hood at the pups and checked out the labels.
The numbers don't seem to relate to the part numbers on the SD site for their stock
lipsticks.

Just wondering if the following numbers mean anything to anyone out there.

I've sent a second email to SD with the following info, but i thought i'd throw it out here on the forum also...

Neck, SLS-1 0916 1GM83
Middle, SLS1 0917 IGM84
Bridge, SLS1b 0918 1GM85

The neck also has the letter "N" written on it in marker pen, and also appears to be reverse wound. At least it's the opposite polarity to the other two, spose it could be that the others are reverse wound, i only did a quick check with a fridge magnet!!

Many thanks

Re: SD Lipstick pickups on my Strat

congrats on your "strat meets Dano" ax!

I'll take a guess at this.

I know that it's pretty hard to dig up pickup specs from Fender!

I'd guess that the "custom" part likely refers to SD winding them as a calibrated set, to Fender's spec. Although the description page says the SLS-1b is hotter, it doesn't say what the resisitance is. Perhaps Fender wanted their own calibration, though it's likely not far from a set you would get from SD.

as you probably know, the current Fender AS strats have a bridge that's probably somewhere around 7K, compared to the 6K or whatever of the other two, plus they now wire the mid tone to the bridge as well. Likely, your set reflects a similar calibration, but of course lower - the regular SLS is 4.3K!

If your 2 & 4 "in between" positions are quiet, then indeed, the mid is RWRP, as your magnet test indicates

FYI, the SD "general" email addresses do sometimes tend to take a while to get a response from. I think the first time I emailed them, it took about 2 weeks for a reply, and by then, I had my answer on the forum.

Re: SD Lipstick pickups on my Strat

Thanks for the input guy's

I gleened the following label info from the SD site

SLS1 80031500371 SLS-1 Lipstick for Strat
SLS1 80031500372 SLS-1 Lipstick for Strat RwRp
SLS1B 80031500373 SLS-1B Lipstick Strat Cust Brdg

apparently if the pups were stock these are the numbers that should be on the labels,
but obviously the're not so i'm assuming they are customs.

Oddly it's the neck pup thats the oddball regarding polarity, i would have thought that the middle would have been the candidate for RWRP, this is why i'm after a bit more info, t'all seems a bit strange.

Oh and yes, is extremley Hot but apart from that all the other positions seem well balanced volume wise.

I think i should've spent a bit more time with the plate off, but i was just doing a string change 'an rod tweak. maybe i'm gonna have to revisit an checkout the wiring in depth.

Trouble is i just wanna play the thing!!
