SD Pups for old school doom and stoner rock?

First post, so I'm a newb here. Replacing the pups in my Epi LP Custom later this month and am looking for a more vintage heavy rock tone. Has Gibson pups now but going to go with some SDs. Styles I play range from old school true doom (Sabbath, Pentagram, Witchcraft) to stoner rock (Kyuss), and I'd like to clean it up from time to time for some blues. So kind of a classic hard rock tone I suppose. I tend to play on the neck most of the time and like that "woody" kind of hollow tone.

I have a JB/Jazz combo in my Ravelle that I really like, but they are more articulate and tend to favor that Iron Maiden tone that I like to noodle with but are not giving me the tone I want to get out on my LP.

So, suggestions? Thanks!!

C5/59 would be great for classic rock tones.
C5 reminds me of Lenny Kravitz's "Always on the run (mamma said)" tone sometimes.
I've tried the 59 neck in a mahogany-maple top guitar and liked it very much.

Re: SD Pups for old school doom and stoner rock?

I'm going to recommend a 59' or a C5 for the bridge. Either of these will be tight and focused with crisp highs and tight lows. Will be good for all sorts of rock tones. I'll also say either APH in the neck...smooth, warm yet articulate. Retains clarity no matter how much gain you throw at it...and it's perfect for smokey blues licks. The PG would also be good. A little less bass and mids than the APH, a little more sizzle on top and a snarly bite...but not obnoxious.

A pair of '59s, or maybe even Invaders pulled down away from the strings.

In the bridge.....any of the vintage lineup, the Custom 5, and the DiMarzio Super Distortion.

In the neck.....any of the vintage lineup.

Also....check out the Invader.

If you want less articulate than a JB, I wouldn't go for a 59.

If you want a sludgy sound.. A Custom Custom bridge sounds VERY full from what I've heard. You could mate that with a APH-1n or a 59'n.

Have fun!

You can get some wicked fuzz tones out of the PGn with the tone rolled back.

Re: SD Pups for old school doom and stoner rock?

Cool -- thanks for the replies. I should have maybe explained the JB a little more -- its not the articulation (which it has) but the tone that is not what I want for this style of music. Its great for some of the things I play but just not the darker sounding stuff.

Re: SD Pups for old school doom and stoner rock?

I wanted good old fashioned LP tones from my LP copy (solid maple top Agile) and SD 59's N and B delivered perfectly. I also have Seths in another carved top guitar and love them too.

Re: SD Pups for old school doom and stoner rock?

I would suggest C5/59 combo but have also heard great things about the tony iommi signature pickups (they supposably clean up well and make the signature SG way ahead of other epi's)
