SD set for Jazz and Blues

I have a 2004 ibanez SA220 EX. Vintage Trem. Mahogany back with maple top. I am looking for a balanced set of standard humbucking pups. I want my neck pup to be round and warm for jazz comping. I will using the neck pup clean only. I want a bridge pickup that is bright and articulate clean-almost single coil, but can handle up through high gain amp models for Santana-ish tones. Please advise. Thx.

much rather have the 59,now thats jazz really good on the years and very vintage sounding.

the apro2 is awesome clean AND distorted, it is the Jazz that sucks for, well, jazz. It is too clear- good for that clinical Metallica clean sound.

There's many pickups that can do what you ask.

A set of Duncan Duncan JazzN and JazzB could do it...

So could a set of Seth Lovers, AIIPro's, Pearly Gates or Antiquitys.

Even a set of 59's could do the trick if you keep the volume down or use a clean setting on your amp, as the 59N is similar to the pickup Wes Montgomery used in his L5 but is a little lower in output...hence: cleaner.

None will sound like a single coil...nor will any other full size humbucker unless you split it into a single coil, which is possible to do with any of the pickups I mentioned if they are ordered with 4 conductor cable so they can be split into a single coil.

And none of the pickups mentioned above or in this thread SUCK...

it aint a statement,just a matter of subjective OPINION.:smokin:
for me the a2pro sounds too spongy and smooth for jazz.
Jazz chords gota stay clear and clean(sharp if you may).
again only my opinion.

Welcome to the forum!
I have a Jazz at the neck and a JB at the bridge on my semi-hollow body and I split them with a Push/Pull pot. Some people say the JB is too bright but since I have a semi-hollow body, it kind of mellows it down and balances it out (I think, 'cause I've never listened to any other guitar with a JB at the bridge). I like the splitted sound and I think both the Jazz and JB sound good when splitted. I also paly a lot of Santana stuff and the combination works very well for me.

In theory, you will never get a Santana tone out of any bridge pickup because that tone is the classic "woman" tone that you get from the neck pickup

to get what you say you are after, i would use a seth lover in the neck and a jazz model in the bridge. the seth is warm and rich sounding, can do clean jazz type stuff and sings nicely with overdrive (even though you say clean only). the jazz bridge model is bright and articulate, doesnt really sound much like a single coil, but is fairly low in output. a little more bottom and top than the seth with cleaner mids and i think the combined setting might be very nice, especially if you had independant volumes!!

I thought he used the Gibson SG standard for those recordings which I could reproduce with my bridge pickup in my SG Standard I used to have.

Seth and JB (maybe CC instead of JB). I had Seth and JB in a 335-lke
guitar. Seth had a great jazz/blues tone, JB was maybe was a tad
bright. But getting rid of a little extra highs is not hard; roll off the
tone, use 250K pots, etc...

Another choice if you are after a 'classic'tone with some extra
personality is to get a phat cat in the neck. If you are not familiar
with P90's, go to your nearby music store and try some in a bunch
of different guitars (jazz box, solidbody, etc).

well now slash doesnt play jazz does he?
yes the a2pro is warm and round but not the kind that will get you into jazz territory.it is an excellent pickup for blues and rock.

i am in the process of buying a seth for the neck of my LP strictly for playing clean jazz and bossa nova.
seth´s are legendary here in the forum and im pretty sure they wont let me down.

So if i put Seth in neck and a2pro in bridge, i will have a pair of pickup that good for blues, rock, jazz and bossa nova then?

dont get things mixed up im only putting the a2pro in the bridge for hard rock and blues.
the seth in the neck is for jazz,bossa,and other cleaner stuff.

Here are my suggestions, the Seth Lover in the neck sounds like EXACTLY what you are looking for. For the bridge, the Jazz bridge, 59 Bridge, or the Pearly gates bridge should do it for ya! By your statement "bright and articulate clean-almost single coil" I think the Jazz bridge may be the best way to go.
