SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

A few years back, Ed along with Matt, his tech, and Chip Ellis, a master builder from FMIC, spent a couple of days with us to do some tone research. While Ed was auditioning different pickups at full volume in the SD sound room, he was playing various riffs and song snippets. But he seemed particularly drawn to Jimmy Page licks. And he played them perfectly--no surprise. You would've thought it was Page himself.

That's when I realized that just like so many Baby Boomer guitarists who have meticulously sought out Ed's tone, Ed must have been doing the same thing with Page's. Maybe it doesn't mean much, but it puts things in a certain perspective. And kind of closes the circle, in a way.

Yet when EVH has interviews he claims he never listened to Page or Hendrix let alone learned their riffs and licks.

Funny I never see the majority of the people in this thread on TMRZoo. And why dis Dave Matthews? You seem to have a problem with any musician that doesn't share your narrow methodology of tone or playing. Some of us (most of us) don't want to sound like some other guitar player.

I've mentioned this before, but every serious guitarist out there (including the greats) has at one time or another copped licks from their heroes and/or tone chased them. Or to put it another way, studied their heroes.

The Page angle with Ed is news to me, but I have seen him do Deep Purple and of course Cream.

I myself have studied (to a microscopic degree) Ed of course, but also Tom Scholz, Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Steve Morse and Eric Johnson.

Every serious guitarist has a Tone Quest (TM), and learning how their favorite players got their tone is just a part of it.

Good luck with that.

Nobody, from the noobiest of noob players all the way up to the godliest guitar gods sounds totally 100% unique; either
with their playing or their tone.

Furthermore, much of music has been "steal from an old tune and improve upon it".

And, there's only so many notes on the fretboard.

And this is why they are guitar gods and you're just posting your obsessions on an online forum. Everyone's tone is unique, thats what make us individuals. Maybe when we start we try to imitate our heros and such, but at some point we mature and develop our own sound/tone.....yes we may take someone else's as a groundwork and build upon that, but why are you so obsessed with sounding like someone else? You won't ever sound or play like Ed, thats what makes Ed, Ed. Grow up

Hey, ah, you've got an EVH logo on your nose. Ever noticed it?

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

Everyone's tone is unique, thats what make us individuals.

Enlighten me by showing us just how unique your tone is with a clip or vid. Then you would prove your point there.

...

Along these lines (and I'm repeating myself here), I have numerous influences (both playing and tone)... I study them in-depth.

There's a difference between trying to be Ed and studying Ed. Or anyone for that matter.

Again...(and I'm repeating myself here), thats why people like Slash, Page, Clapton, EVH are guitar gods and you're just sitting here studying them "in-depth." They developed their own styles and sounds and you have nothing better to do than to study the hell out of them instead of just playing

People have been debating the EVH tone long before you were on this forum, and they'll debate it long after you're gone. Its been beaten to death. Anytime you feel the urge to talk about the brown sounds, trying using the search section and peruse to your heart's content

Seeing as there are numerous "x's tone" threads here, perhaps you'd be better suited over at one of those threads than grousing on and on
about a particular player (Ed) and his tone.

Ill make sure to remember that the next time I start a "This pickup will get you Ed's tone" thread

One time, I was standing in the Duncan Custom shop and watched Maricela Juarez put her recipe book of every famous guitarist's pickups down on her bench. I thought to myself how great it would be to tuck that book into the back of my pants and run off with it, or take it upstairs and photocopy every page, and return it to the bench.

I F'ing should have! :18:

I know the book you're talking about. Actually, it's just a bunch of loose papers held together with a binder clip. But if you look closely at it, all of the specs have been whited out. The one she showed you is the one that's used for show and tell purposes. The actual specs are located in a cardboard Banker's box in-- oh crap. You almost made me give it away!
