SD SH-5 Custom Question.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

If you get into higher output pups than the Custom you're probably going to get an increase in the mids. Maybe someone else will chime in who knows of a higher output pup with the same tone.

If you're happy with the tone of the Custom, why not just add a booster pedal. There are MANY on the market which offer a pretty transparent tone. May be just the ticket for you.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

I have a custom shop Duncan Custom that is F spaced, is slightly higher DCR than advertised regular spaced humbucker. I don't have the exact # in front of me...Something like 15.2DCR I believe. Perhaps that is because of F spacing ?

DCR is not output.

You could try swapping in a double thick ceramic.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

It is hard to believe anyone could want more output than a Custom, but the best way to do it without altering the tone is a clean boost, like the Pickup Booster. Magnet swaps and additional turns will change the tone, too.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

I always wanted to a Parallel Axis Original Humbucker with an ceramic. I bet it will have the same tonality as Duncan Custom with a bit more volume. Otherwise i would look into actives like the Blackout.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

It's hard for me to believe someone would want something hotter than a custom. The custom is a very balanced pickup, or at least that's my opinion. I can play the solos of Stairway to heaven, Comfortable Numb, Iron Man then with a few adjustments play Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth etc. Awesome pickup!

You and Demanic just covered everything I was going to say. Double thick ceramic for a beefed up ceramic custom makes sense, and so does ceramic in a PATB-1b.

 Or if you want ALL the output, double thick ceramic in a PATB-1b with a Pickup Booster.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

A PATB-2 as PA Distortion has already a double thick ceramic. A double thick ceramic would change the tonality to much more mids, since the OP wants to stay neare a Custom with a single ceramic.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

I've also heard of a Dean pickup that is like a Custom but with a triple ceramic configuration.

The mag out of a Sh6 actually sounds pretty good in a SH5. It pulls back the highs a touch actually and fattens up the low mids. Still has the voice of the custom but with just more bottom. Works with amps like JCM900s that lack bottom and oophm with like boogies they get kinda flubby

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

I just want a Warm, Fat, Aggressive humbucker where the highs aren't too Fizzy. At this point, i'll take any suggestions.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

The Alt 8 is the first I thought of. It is as if a Custom got more mids, but retained the bass and got more output. It is a pretty aggressive pickup.

I'm wondering now how this would sound in a Les paul Standard? I have one LP That is a little thin sounding & another that sounds more compressed. Maybe i'll just put the Alt 8 in the Compressed one & the Custom in the Thinner sounding one.

Another option for the LP that sounds thin is the Custom Custom. It doesn't sound as aggressive as the Custom, but it has a lot of mids.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

The Custom is probably my all time favorite Duncan pickup. The tone is very similar to a P90 that I had in an old Les Paul JR. just more output. In fact, I recently put in a Custom Shop order for what will basically be a PATB-Custom. You may want to drop an email to MJ and see if she can cook you up a Custom style pickup with a bit more output. I’m sure she could make that happen.

How would the PATB-Custom Differ from the Original Custom? I'm thinking a pickup that is somewhere between a JB & a Custom. A Pickup that is nice & chunky, Warm, Aggressive with Some bloom on the low strings when strumming chords. I'd also like the Pickup to not be fizzy on the high end. I hate fizzy highs, i hate that it creates a Metallic sound on low strings due to the Fizz. I guess maybe i'm asking a lot but it's what i hear in my head. your custom video on youtube sound amazing, especially when you tune to Drop D.

Well, the PATB-Custom may sound exactly like a Custom. It may be for ascetics only. lol. I just really like the PATB look in a FR guitar. The PATB-1b is similar to the JB but different. I’m assuming the this custom shop PATB-Custom will be similar. We’ll have to see. Thanks for the compliment on my vid.

Joel is this description too much "I'm thinking a pickup that is somewhere between a JB & a Custom. A Pickup that is nice & chunky, Warm, Aggressive with Some bloom on the low strings when strumming chords. I'd also like the Pickup to not be fizzy on the high end."
