SD SH-5 Custom Question.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

Joel is this description too much "I'm thinking a pickup that is somewhere between a JB & a Custom. A Pickup that is nice & chunky, Warm, Aggressive with Some bloom on the low strings when strumming chords. I'd also like the Pickup to not be fizzy on the high end."

You just described the PATB-1b.

Yes. It works well for that. What guitar?

would be in a 2001 Les Paul Standard. My concern with that pickup is, it's described as being bright, would it be too bright?

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

Do you have a Custom in the guitar now? If so, what is your pickup height from the strings?

Right now i have an EMG 81 in the bridge & the neck. I'm trying to move over to passives for this guitar.

SD SH-5 Custom Question.

The Custom will not have the same perceived output as the 81, but it’s really not that much “weaker.” It is a very fat sounding pick that has a very nice grind in the mid range. The highs are present, but not harsh. You can pick up a used one on eBay fairly cheap. If you want a little more, get the TB version. It will be slightly hotter because there will be a bit more wire on the bobbin to accommodate the wider spacing. It will handle drop tunings just fine.

Another option would be the Suhr Aldrich.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

Tell me about this Suhr Aldrich of which you speak? Is it Customish but more?

The Aldrich is an interesting pickup. It’s hot without feeling hot under the fingers. It will definitely smack the front end of your amp. Tonally, it’s similar to the Custom, but with a smother top end. Output wise, it sits closer to a Duncan Distortion. They sound monstrous in a Les Paul. Very thick and chewy. It’s an alnico five pickup that still has plenty of mids. Check out YouTube. There are tons of clips of the Suhr Aldrich.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Question.

Yeah, it was mentioned a lot on other forums for a while but this is the first time I saw it mentioned in the same thread as the sd custom.

I'm thinking the Custom or the Aldrich might be right for me. I'm also considering some Motor City Pickups too. The Afwayu & The Solution.
