Yes a significant difference. VVs were generations 2-4 of their noiseless attempts. Areas are the actual success. VVs sound like noiseless singles. Areas sound like real singles. I could go into greater detail but that sums it up succinctly.
As far as the Kinmans, I'd recommend the Woodstocks over the Marvins or the Traditionals. None of them sound like real single coils but the Woodstocks have a cool overwound thing happening that works really well with gain, and they still quack nicely in 2/4, significantly better than the Marvins or the Traditionals in fact. If you don't mind something that doesn't exactly sound like a real single but that has some balls and sounds really good with distortion, you might give those a try.
