SD VINTAGE P90's or ANTIQUITY P90's??

Hi all~ I'm putting together a Strat pickguard using either of these two sets of P90's for the bridge & neck positions, and probably a SD SSL-2 or an Alnico Pro II for the middle, & a 5-way switch, looking for what will hopefully be some new & sweet pleasing all around sounds, & especially in the 2 & 4 positions. This will be used mostly for CLEAN settings. A great SD representative advised that if I opt for the Antiq's, I should go with the SSL-2 since it's a bit brighter & may compensate for the slight softness of the Alnico II mags in the Antiq's,,,, & use the Alnico Pro II or the SSL5-2n if I go with the brighter Vintage 90's, w/Alnico V mags, to better tame the high end a tad. Has anyone had any experience with this kind of setup & had any extraordinary results? I know it won't sound quite like a Strat in the 1 & 5 slots, but I'm fishing around for something with P90's while mixing in a vintage p/u for some funky in between sounds. I already have a vintage SD/OLD FENDER p/u setup, so I have that covered. Any thoughts, ideas or criticisms of this quest? Also, would some wiring be available for me to get just the P90's combined by themselves when in the #3 position, since i would sacrifice having the middle p/u by itself? Thanks so much in advance for all your opinions!! Kenny. Oh yeah, I will have a 1 volume & 1 tone setup!! And what value pots??

Hope this helps:
Neck SD P90 for Tele: Vintage vs Antiquity

I’m loving my Antiquity P90.

Re engaging the neck and bridge instead of middle:
1) you’re a wise man
2) easiest way is IMHO with a Megswitch E: https://www.stewmac.com/dropped_items/how-to/E-Model_Megaswitch.html they are super easy to wire. A few fellow forum members can do it with a superswitch as well I’m sure. I think this is easier.

Hey Blillie... Is it possible for you, or anyone, to draw a diagram for this... 1 vol., 1 tone, no middle pickup alone & 2/4 positions as described, & that megaswitch. Thanks for your help

The link that he gave you already has your precise wiring diagram on that page......the numbers on the switch for the 3 singlecoil pickups plus the 1V 1T wiring.

I don’t have good schematic skills but per the link above:

The megaswitch has 7 points and this is how you wire them:

Point #
Wire assignment
1 middle pickup hot wire
2 neck pickup hot wire
3 output to volume pot
4 empty
5 empty
6 solder jumper to 7
7 bridge pickup hot wire

Then this is the pots:

And missing is the three ground wires from the pickups that go to the back of the volume pot and the ground cable if the output jack to the same place.

Heya blillie,,,, i checked out the Stew-Mac Megaswitch es, & it looks like the S switch is the one if i go for the 2 P90's & the SSL-2 in the middle, correct? Especially to get the bridge & neck happening & nixing the solo middle spot. Sound good?

I think you want the Megaswitch E. If you install it like I mentioned above you’ll get what you want. The wiring I know for the S is the traditional strat one that you don’t want.

Again if you check the first link I posted you’ll see the positions you can get with the E:

As you can see in the bottom right you get the positions you want.

Re: SD VINTAGE P90's or ANTIQUITY P90's??

Thanks all, allow me to digress.... Which combo of pups lefr perhaps lead to some more 'Stratty' sounds, albeit with P90's??

I know.....i'm going a little nutty, but before i crack thr piggy bank, i need to be sure.....

Re: SD VINTAGE P90's or ANTIQUITY P90's??

So, to be clear, I'm leaning towards the Antiq 90's & the SSL2 in the middle, which pu needs to be rw/rp, the middle, right? SD told me the Antiq's both have the same orientation....? With the reverse SSL2, I'll be hum free in 2&4, but what about #3 with the 2 Antiq's?
And i still need the Megaswitch S, right?

Well, you won't be hum free in either single p90 position either. Its a goal that is usually to complicated to try and sort out, and in this case utterly impossible. You will have to decide which option to go for, because you cannot have the 2 p90's hum free and then the one single cancelling in both 2 and 4 too.

Since you have 3 pickups and you’re going to combine them all you can’t have all the positions humfree. An RWRP SSL2 will give you the result you describe but you won’t have hum cancellation with the two Ant. since they have the same polarity.

IMHO the Megaswitch you need is the E, not the S.

Re: SD VINTAGE P90's or ANTIQUITY P90's??

The E still won't cure the Antiq's hum, right? What's the diff between the E & S? K

Re: SD VINTAGE P90's or ANTIQUITY P90's??

NOTHING will cure the hum.
And, yet again, the E is giving you what you want for your selections, the S is not. Is this method of saying it simple enough to sink in......its getting somewhat tiresome to answer the same questions a dozen times over.

Re: SD VINTAGE P90's or ANTIQUITY P90's??

Thank you Alex. I've got OCD, & I don't mean the overdrive! But seriously, thanks!

Hey, no prob.....I'm sorry I got a bit frustrated there, but we weren't trying to steer you down the wrong road or anything. All the advice given here on this forum is good, and we do try and help as much as possible. I hope the guitar is a killer once you get it together.
