SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Not sure. I asked MJ if it was possible to keep the tonality of the '78 with just bumping up the output closer to 10k. She said no problem & while I'm not sure what & how she did it, I trust her word explicitly !

We'll see.....I wanna make this my first project of the new year, thus the sell off (in the Trading Post) of the extra cabs & stuff not being used

That body, black trem spaced '78, black hardware incl. Floyd Rose, maple Strat head neck w/black tuners.....Mr. Mike's XSSIVE mojo....should be a killer :D

BTW, the body is alder covered in a snake skin like material...looks & feels like the real thing. The cavity cover has it on it & he gave me extra for the headstock :headbang:

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Terry, you could have a better tone than DeMartini ever did.....just put the 78 in the snakeskin superstrat and go through two of your best OD pedals into the Top Hat Emplexador, Celtic Edana, or Fuchs, and run a couple in stereo. I guarantee your rig probably stomps his. LOL

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Too bad I suck :laugh2:

Warren's a badass....I'm sure he'd sound great thru a Gorilla Amp :bigok:

Yeah man, I'm guessing it would smoke thru the Emp & Edana.

Getting it finished is gonna be my first priority once I sell off some of the stuff I'm not using

Don't get me wrong....DeMartini is one of a very few of my 80's faves. However - was his tone all that? JB in a super-strat w/ floyd, suped up Marshall or Soldano etc...judicious use of delay and you'll be Round and Round, Back for More, Laying it down, all on 7th Avenue all you want.

Honestly, I think you could do it with a Metal Zone and a DD-3 through well eq'ed Crate.

Better yet, are you sure it's Warren's tone you're after and not Robin Crosby's???

I'm a fan of RATT's songs, but Warren's tone was nothing special- sure it sounded cool, but it was a JB loaded alder bodied superstrat woth a Floyd into a Marshall with some chorus and delay. His playing was great, but there were alot of guitarists that sounded and played like him back then...

He did have the coolest graphics on any guitar though.

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

I can't speak for the author of the thread, but for myself, I think I'm going more for a DiMartini Snakeskin Super-Strat look as opposed to Warren's tone.

His was the tone of the day....not saying it was good or bad...and yes, you could say it's a Robbin Crosby tone as well; Robbin was a badass in his own right.

I'm just looking for that old school vibe in a great playable axe. I'm dying to try the '78 thru my amps & see what happens :D

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Warrens tone was good, but not very unique. It is the basic superstrat into Marshall tone that EVH made big, with a few differences, like his slapback echo abuse. It is indeed not to hard to get (neither is Eddies tone really, despite fans arguing for 25+ years about how he got it). As said earlier, his tone was the tone of those days, which I think, while not spectacular in itself (how many tones really are), is great in it's own right. However, if he makes a "hot-rodded" JB signature humbucker, I can't wait to try it out. I would try that one out, no matter if Warrens name was on it or not.

And I'm all for a stylin axe regardless of the tone! I mean that snakeskin look - you'll be so cool it won't matter how it sounds! Even the Ace himself only stuck the third pup in for looks!

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Ultimately, it's what it sounds like that matters......if all else fails, I could make a pair of boots out of it :D

Or sell it to Jeff H & he can make a thong for himself :laugh2:

First time I saw them, they had a wall of Laneys..

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Yeah, that thread popped up right after I bought the '78....I've been waiting to see what he decides on, but a regular JB might do the trick if I wanna try something different.

And they're a dime a dozen, so................

Terry, I just recently scored a vintage double creme JB from the early 80's in a trade not too long ago, and I can tell you it is mellower than the modern JB that I had. A little more blanced and not so piercing in the upper mids. Fits really nicely in my double fat strat with an APH in the neck.

Watch eBay, and snag a vintage one when they come up. Worth the $100 bucks or so, IMO.

Oh, and I gave up snakeskin thongs in the early 90's. All cotton for this dude now. :laugh2:

:chairfall :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I just spit out a little coffee !!!! :D

I think I'm gonna go with the '78 I've got & see what it can do in there. Everyone raves about the pickup, so it atleast warrants a shot.

Funny thing is: I don't care for humbuckers as a whole :dunno:

This will be my sole 'bucker axe, so for those moments it should be fine.

I've also got Brobucker & I'm not sure what color it is under the cover, but between those 2, I should be o.k.

BTW....what guitar is that? Looks GREAT !!!!

Hey Guys,

I got one of the Warren Pickups before they were pulled from the SD web site

it is a killer sounding pick up it sounds more like a Dimarzio Tone Zone then a SD JB or a Custom 5

also it is way hotter then a 78 i have one of those also and the Warren is twice as hot

it is at 15 and the 78 is a 8

killer pickups i like them both

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Hey Mike,

I missed that link i was only looking under the Custom shop link

My WD is wound hotter it is 18.9
i just checked
killer sounding

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

I put an A2 in an old overwould JB (18.3K), should be the same as the WD CS model. It sounds nice, smoother than the regular JB. It's in a maple body/maple neck Charvel clone and sounds good, but it's a very bright guitar. I would think it would work well with most maple neck bolt ons.

Re: SD Warren deMartini humbucker

Wow, talk about reviving an old thread! :welcome:

Anyway, since it's back up, I might as well ask here: Anyone know if you can get the deMartini in other colors than black? I know, it IS a custom shop, but many custom shops are less " custom" than the name implies.
