SD Wax Potting question

I have an old APH1BG which I believe to be an Alnico 2 pro Bridge and it is 2 conductor. It sounds freaking awesome. I was wondering if it was potted cause it doesnt look like it. Does anyone know what year SD started potting pickups or have they always been potted? Is it possible this was never potted?

It should have been potted, but over the years the extra wax gets cleaned off, and sometimes heat melts extra wax out of the pickup parts so that it looks like there's none there. In reality it's still in the coils. The only way to truly know is to take it apart and start unwinding the coils. Instead of that, just plug it in and see if it feeds back. An unpotted pickup is pretty easy to hear. A pickup that has lost wax out of the coil might feed back but not as obviously as one that has never been potted.

Thanks thats a good explanation. And it only feeds back when it is really loud kind of good feedback if you know what I mean.

When I wax pot a pup I use 20% bees wax and praffin wax, keep it between 140-158 Fahrenheit, and carefully clean up the outside of the pup when Im done. It never shows! You really cant see it.
