SD's Tele 1 Humbucker, 1 Single Coil, Push/Pull diagram confusion

Hi! I'm new! How are y'all doin? :)

I've got a MIM Tele that I want to make heavier so I bought a Hot Rails for Tele (bridge) off ebay. I am going to keep the lipstick single coil in the neck. I have a spare push/pull volume pot that I want to use on this guitar.

Alright, those were the facts, on to the confusing part...

I was browsing though the wiring diagrams for telecasters, and I came across this one, which calls itself "1 Humbucker, 1 Single Coil, Push/Pull". My question is - what does the push pull do in this diagram? Does it switch the humbucker between full and split coil? Does it switch the humbucker between series and parallel? Does it switch the pickups out of phase with each other? Or does it do something completely different?

Also - how would you wire the guitar if you were in my shoes? I was thinking series parallel between the humbucker. Does anyone know of any links or pics of such a wiring scheme?

I apologize for any noobism in my post, I'm new to the whole pickup wiring thing. Although I've been soldering for years so no problems with my soldering chops. :lmao:

Thanks you!

Re: SD's Tele 1 Humbucker, 1 Single Coil, Push/Pull diagram confusion

Technically it's shorting the red and white wires to ground, which results in splitting the humbucker to a single coil. So you lose your hum cancallation, but you get whatever sound comes from just one of the coils.

In the bridge position like that it typically splits to the coil towards the neck pickup, which is the slug coil or non-screw coil in typical humbuckers. (Drawing shows rails, so it seems ambiguous.)

Take a look at the color code information sheet for some additional detail of what the wires are

Excellent excellent, thank you, that makes complete sense.

Going from that color code link you sent (where green=southstart, red=southfinish, white=northfinish, black=northstart), I have thought and thought about it and I came up with this wiring (excuse the poor MS paint skills)

telecaster wiring humbucker series parallel plus single coil.jpg

Is this correct? Basically I want to be able to switch the bridge humbucker between series and parallel with the push pull volume.

If it helps anyone I used this as a guide

Thanks to anyone who lends me their time. :)

Cool. Anyone else wanna chime in about this? Not much info on the net regarding hot rails wired in parallel. I'm hoping to get a kind of single coil-y sound from it (when in parallel) to keep that sweet tele tone, yet add some versatility with series mode. Am I mad? :)

Give it a go.....only you will know if it suits your needs.

I will. :) I'll hopefully make a video since there's little information/audio samples on hot rails wired in parallel.

That's a good choice to run it either series or parallel. IMO the parallel is a better sound than split, and you get hum cancelling too.

Did this wiring work? I wanna do the same please help!
