SDUGF designed baritone build - YOU design it, I'll build it

Re: SDUGF designed baritone build - YOU design it, I'll build it

Stratocaster and Telecaster mostly.

I have a 1996 American Standard Strat with a 1 piece maple neck that was awesome (just took it off last year in favor of a maple / rosewood Road Worn neck).

My Tele has a 2 piece maple neck - built just like a maple / rosewood, but it's a maple slab glued to a maple neck. Weird, but I love the tone of it.

My Strat sounds fuller without the maple neck.

So, I guess my main gripe is not so much sound as it is aesthetics. I just think they're ugly

BUSTED!

To be fair, I'm not entirely sure Maple f-boards are a sure match with single coils. They do tend to be quite bright - maybe that excessive brightness is what you were thinking was a scooped-ish sound? With humbuckers, though, it's amazing. They add back some bite and presence that humbuckers don't generally have, whereas singlecoils do. In other words, they sonically balance each other out. Ebony would do that as well.

But I love the look of a maple board. they also feel amazing to play on. smooth, slick, and fast. And they're much easier to clean that say, rosewood, with its open grain that gets finger gunk in it all too easily.

I think ebony is the way to fly - feels sooooooo good and looks great, and sounds great.

I'll tell you how it feels like when I got my custom neck that comes with stainless steel frets. The luthier said the one piece quartersawn maple are harder to find now,and it's been 3 month since he's ordering from LMI for the damn maple and the frets. Still not delivered yet. :(

The guy said that stainless steel frets have kinda more "zing" to the attack and the notes if you know what I mean. So then I think it'd be better match for low tuning guitars like baritone and such, just to enhance the overall articulation.

heres my two bits

swamp ash body
string thru body bridge
maple neck/ebony board long scale length. 28" would be nice. ss frets and carbon fiber re-enforcement rods
vintage type firebird mini hum in the neck, tapped p90 in the bridge.
v/v/t/t with p/p on #1 tone for tapping the bridge pup and #2 tone for putting pups in series

yeah not up on baritones like to try one, I think one in alder with an offset jaguar, mustang, or jagstang body would be like riding in a screaming chicken upside down. i dont know if a neck thru or bolt on neck has any advantages over eachother though a neck through would look great, maybe with a 3 or 5 piece stripe neck made of mahogany and quilted maple.

Oh yes, SS frets are AMAZING. The feel is great, the bends are effortless and the tone is indeed more high-mid focused.

I love 'em :)

Re: SDUGF designed baritone build - YOU design it, I'll build it

2/3 buckers/minibuckers with 2/3 way mini switches for series/parallel/split and a 3/5 way switch.

Dark red or green quilt for the finish...

I have been thinking about string through vs. toploader --- I really like toploaders, because they sound better to me, and generally feel slinkier. I can't tell if slinkier would be good because the big heavy strings would carry more tension, or if slinky would be bad because they'll already be slinky because they're tuned so low.

USACG has a great 28 5/8" scale baritone neck 24 frets, that is actually a conversion neck, which means it's meant to go on a regular 25.5" scale guitar body. If I went that route, the body and neck would both be interchangeable with my other guitars and projects, which is a neat prospect. I could swap the neck around to different bodies if I wanted, and figure out if a bari '51, Strat, Tele, Les Paul type thing (I'm still building it) was the best.

What about a scaled-down Jazz bass body shape?
I think that's an awesome idea!

Honestly, I think it is far preferable to design our own shape for this, since it's a "community designed" build, not a "Fender designed" build, but I like the idea - seems like a no brainer --- why haven't we seen more (any?) scaled-down Jazz shapes on guitars?!

Cliff's: let's make our own design, but the Jazz is a great shape, and a cool start point!

For reference, the Jazz bass body shape:

I think a long top horn and a short bottom horn are absolute necessities for a baritone guitar. As i mentioned before, it helps to keep the guitar better balanced, and gives it a more different look as well - helps it stand out as a "not just a normal guitar" kinda instrument.

I honestly think we should be looking more towards bass designs for inspiration rather than guitar designs - hence the reason I posted that Shecter Stiletto.

Swimming Pool route, One sliding pickup on a rail that slides from bridge to neck.
Maybe you can get one of the resident Engineers to design it.
This is a far fetched, but serious idea that Gibson did with one of their basses.

Do a "homer simpson yellow" esquire, or "butterscotch" as the kids are calling it these days.

It should have a pickguard with Nyan Cat on it.
