Opinions, experiences, etc?

I've looked at Harmony-Central, but like always, it was a transparent collection of people whose reasons for loving and hating things were spurious at best.

I'm looking to buy a guitar for my girlfriend, a classical violist by trade, and in our first outings to local guitar shops, she has identified the S6+ Spruce as the current frontrunner in both feel and sound. I agree with her that it's both comfy and pleasant sounding, but I have a friend who has had nothign but troubles out of her Seagull, so I'm wondering if there are any perpetual complaints about the marque....

I've seen several people here give very nice reviews on Seagull....great value and quality for the money. I believe Evan was one of those who recommended them in the past.

I've played several, and agree that they're really nice. Have her check out some Taylors as well, if she hasn't already. Amazing ease of playability. A little more pricey, but worth it.

Yea, if I could afford to grab a Taylor 414 for her, I would. One of my favorite instruments anywhere. The Big Baby would be the only Taylor in range, really, and now that its street price has jumped from $300 up to $400, it's not nearly the bargain it once was.

Some of the new Ibanez Exotic WOod series look interesting, but I can't find any local dealers who stock them yet, so I haven't had a chance to put my hands on one. I always thought the Artwood series was a pretty good value, though, so those may be an option.

Annother good value guitar for the $$ is the Dean line of accoustics. Great looking guitars, and most of them priced under $500, with a bunch for $350 or so. I wouldn't be hesitant about the Seagulls at all....I've not picked one up that was a poor instrument.

The Seagulls are generally a good deal, I personnally have not found any problems with them. The S6+ is a great guitar for the money, good sound and a good build.

If your looking for alternatives to compare with, try Breedlove Atlas series, Alvarez, Blue Ridge, Takimine or Yamaha. I believe they will all carry guitars in your price range. I would reccomend a solid wood top as you have chosen. Some of these may suprise you in terms of sound, particularly the Breedloves, Alvarez and Blue Ridge.

seagull's are great guitars, i own one of the M series and have played one of the S series guitars. the only problem is, if you don't get a nice protective finish put on it, they can get the hell dented and scratched out of them, as happened with my friend. but you should also check out Martin guitars, Seagull's are actually some kind of sister-company to Martin i believe, both are made in Quebec.

+1 for the seagull.... Have played both the S6 and M6 (which I own)... Only things would be to get the guitar checked and setup by a competant tech... Cedar top's on both, so they mark up pretty easy - but they sound real perty...

Hey St Genesius, I might be able to help. I own(ed) an S6+ for about 8 years, and was my main basher during that whole time. The cedar made it very mellow (definitely not a country-ish tone) but was great for fingerpicking. Construction was great and stood up to many nicks and bangs. The headstock developed a crack a few years ago, but it didn't go all the way through so was still playable. Tone-wise, it was fairly loud but definition wan't brilliant.

The main thing tho, is how does it play? Since it was my 1st guitar and I figured out what I liked about guitars post buying it, I have to say the fingerboard felt very wide. I've got small hands, and for a girl it might be a bit of an issue. Stretches weren't comfortable. To be honest, if I was going to spend the same money again I'd probably get the Big Baby - the necks more comfy and it has a much bigger, woodier tone (IMO). I have an S6. I like it. If I had the cashish, I'd probably get a higher end acoustic, or maybe not. I like smaller scale gtrs, and the seagulls have a 24.8 scale. or something like that. I did some sanding of the neck to get the feel a bit better to me, & I also did some bridge work.

I can't comment on the spruce top S6, but I did have a Cedar Top S6+. Great guitar! One that I regret trading off. I just don't think that you can go wrong with any of the Seagull guitars.
