THESE specific hardtails are the sh*t, I love the added mass and solid brass construction. I like Hipshot hardtails too for a more streamlined look but sometimes you just need a big chunk of brass!
They're fairly similar acoustically however the pickups are different which makes them have different characteristics when it matters more, plugged in. The purple has the Jake E Lee correct setup of a double screw coil JB (similar to the Holdsworth prototype he had in his white Fender/Charvel) in the bridge and two SDS-1s. The blue has an AT-1 in the bridge and Injector neck and middle. I can flip a coin on the bridge pickups as I like both of them but I have to give the edge to the SDS-1 in the neck it just sounds like Jake E Lee's Badlands neck tone and I love that sound, so much so that I'm willing to tolerate the fact that they aren't hum canceling. I liked it so much in this I put one in another one of my guitars in the neck.
Thanks! That was the plan to clean up, simplify and modernize Jake's classic blue and purple Charvels and bring them out of the 80s and into the modern age while keeping key important factors like the pickups and brass.

I love the blue right off the bat, but the more I stare at the purple one, the more I realize it's the best example of that color combo - purple/black/brass or gold.

I love the purple/black/brass combo that's why I chose to build that variation for myself. Finding the right shade of purple and the right blue was the tricky part.

Nope, Andy didn't order it lol. The AT-1 has actually become my go to bridge hum for builds it seems. Since I did the trans black DA.004 with the AT-1 and Hum From Hell pair I really liked that setup and recommend it to everyone. The Injectors were also my call since hum canceling was requested and the Injector bridge and neck model have become some of my favorite stacked singles, so going with two neck models in it worked out well. If it's a guitar I'm building just for resale or if a customer can't decide exactly what they want the AT-1 is a great all around bridge hum and it works well with the Hum From Hell. Those two seem to please most people so it's sort of become the default pair I guess. DA.016 is being built for resale based on specs I chose and I went AT-1 and Hum From Hell in it too.

To really simplify it, a smoother less mid spikey JB I guess. When comparing these two guitars back to back that's what you get, the JB has more bite and more of the famous mid push and the AT-1 softens some of the bite and lessens the mid push sort of evens things out a bit. It's kind of like the JB grew up, had kids and had to turn the volume down from 11 and get a real job lol. It still does metal no problem, plenty of kick, but to me it does cleans and lower gain stuff better than the JB.

Yeah, I meant 'affect' in a positive way. By making the neck more rigid, it reflects (rather than absorbs) more string vibration, so you get the bigger acoustic tone etc.

Those are both awesomely cool guitars in cool colors. Love the DiMarzio SDS-1 Pickups too; you don't see them very often and they're truly great pickups.

It does have the JB-ish sound, but I've found that it's more forgiving. Sometimes the JB will hate a guitar, but the AT-1 is one of those universal pickups that work in everything.
I'll be doing one of my next ones in purple. I think I'll save a few bucks and go with this though:

I've used it a few times. Usually one can is just enough. Occasionally I'd need a can and a half.

I've become a big fan of the SDS-1, I do wish there was a hum canceling version of it but I tolerate the bit of 60 cylce since they sound good.
I haven't had an AT-1 sound bad in a guitar yet.
