Seems like people hate the JB

Re: Seems like people hate the JB

JB = Jazz/Blues. If it stood for Jeff Beck, it'd be a signature model, he'd play it, and he'd get money for it.

I just had a band practice and decided to take my JB/Air Norton loaded C-1 Blackjack instead of my usual 85/81 loaded C-1 Stealth...

******nit, I'll say it - I hate that pickup. Way too loose, the mids are absolutely nuts, and the clean sound blows. I'm slapping EMG's in that sucker ASAP!

Consider a C5 in the bridge. That sucker is tight as hell in that guitar.

Joking, right?

I've had the C5 that axe, actually... Not what I'd call 'tight,' let alone 'tight as hell.'

It's got a big bottom end, sure, but I find it to be bouncy. Not to mention the pickup is scooped to all hell.

No I'm not joking at all, and I'm not the only one that thinks so either. Gearjoneser and theodie have said so as much. That's how I chose it. To each his own though. And as as for as being scooped, that's what the mid knob is for on the amp.

Turning up the mid control on an amp to compensate for a scooped pickup sounds entirely different than having a neutral eq'd pickup and the mids down.

As far as GJ and Theodie's statements about the C5 are concerned... I could care less. I'm playing deathmetal - my definition of tight is much more extreme than either of theirs combined. The 81 is a tight pickup. The 85 is a tight pickup. The C5 is not.

Whatever, you can play whatever you want. Most people consider the C5 to be a tight pickup. I kindly offered a suggestion about my experience with the C5 and the C1 and you obviously disagree. You can play extreme metal without EMGs, but you seem to thing differently. This is a stupid argument, and I don't see why you seem to have made such a big deal about your opinion of the "tightness of the C5".

I was simply stating that tightness is going to vary based on style. A bluesman's definition of a tight low end is going to be very different from that of a guy who plays deathmetal.

I brought up EMGs as more of an example of extreme tightness than of the be-all-end-all metal pickups. The Custom is also a fairly tight pickup, as is the Full Shred, Evo, X2N, and DD. The C5 is still loose compared to those, I'd say.

That said, I don't think 'most people' would say that the C5 is a tight pickup. It's tighter than, say, the JB, but it's certainly not the tightest pickup around.

Re: Seems like people hate the JB

Every time I try a JB in a standard tuned guitar it's missing bass, there's just no bass there...but then when I use a downtuned one it's a giant puddle of mud? I have no idea why but it gets everything wrong and nothing right :laugh2:

Re: Seems like people hate the JB

Well good christ I'm going to have to break all your faces based on pickups indeed. Such a worthy battle.

Re: Seems like people hate the JB

I sense no downright hatred towards the JB. I don't know what you're talking about.

Well.....I used to stir everyone up on here becasue it seemed to me everyone went to bed at night with a JB and a box of tissues to clean up the mess afterwards after wanking off about how good they thought their pickup was.

LOL!!!!!!!!!

Well I really don't care. I mean, sure, it might be the most famous / infamous SD pickup, but there are so many others. If anything, I thought for sure that such fanaticism would only apply to PAF people (i.e. towards the PAF set) and Megadeth people (towards the JB/Jazz set).

I stand by statement. And most people do think it's tight. Check out past posts here or read HC. I have guitars with customs (I agree about that one) and DD and the c5 is right up there in the correct instrument. I'm no bluesman but I'm not gonna argue anymore about this with mr. deathmetal, if you wanna have the most ridiculous throwdown in history regarding the tightness of the c5 you can drive south a little and meet me in a parking lot. I'm not that far.j/k. ;)

I personally find the C5 tighter than about 75%+ of Duncans other buckers. Its a tight pickup.

I'll give you that one - it certainly is tighter than most Duncan buckers.

Duncan generally doesn't make tight sounding pickups, though. That's more EMG and DiMarzio's forté.

Re: Seems like people hate the JB

if your pick needs to hit a string 50 times in one second I would recommend not using the c-5 ....for other purposes it sounds great though from the clips I have heard.
