so everyone knows the bass at the beginning and throughout seinfeld. now how do i do it? im pretty sure all it is is some slapping and string snapping, but the tone? is it just like any bass can get it with the right technique? any pointers? i think it would be awesome to be playing bass at a friends house and bust out some seinfeld... whos with me? :usa1:

What about Super Mario Brothers world 1-2... now thats some good bass.

Re: seinfeld bass

it was a keyboard. its easy to get, just press a key. almost every synth builder in the 90s included that sound in their presets. Its quite fun to play with and come up with your own Seinfeld segues.

Re: seinfeld bass

i have that patch on my guitar synth ... i use it to play a little tag whenever someone makes a one liner joke at practice ... lightens the mood and gets us laffin'

That was actually done with a synth.

I remember telling that to my friends in high-school and they were like "No way man! It's slap bAsS!!"

Re: seinfeld bass

Yes, the original is played on a keyboard. A roland, to be exact.

Though, it's easy to learn and play on bass ;)

(I can record a clip for you if you want ^^)

Well... copy the tone? :D

Why would you try to emulate a copy with the real thing? ;)

Anyway, i'll record. I'll post back when it's uploaded.

Re: seinfeld bass

Ok, here it is... it's pretty sloppy, and the tone sucks, since i'm recording a Squier trough a cheap-ass Digitech guitar effect module.

In the first part, i try to show what tone you get from slap\pop technique. Sounds alot better with better gear though, but anyway it's the sound that the old 80's keyboards tried to emulate.

Then, i tried to play a half-assed verision of the seinfeld riff. I got a cold right now, so my hands are stiff, and my brain's not working. Had to improvize the ending.

Anyway! :)

Re: seinfeld bass

And oh... to get the best slap\pop tone possible, medium-low action, fresh stainless steel strings, and good technique is very important.

:)

Re: seinfeld bass

erlend u got some skills, mayn. nice clip. was that done with the ibanez in ur avatar? which pickup was on?

Re: seinfeld bass

NIce one Erlend... I must say, you´ve really gotten tighter these last few months.... surprised me in a really good way :)

Re: seinfeld bass

Well, as i said, that clip was recorded with my old Squier P-bass ;). It's the 5-string model, which has two J-bass pickups (4 string pickups actually :p), which i wired in series to get a fatter tone.

I'm really not in the mood for recording these days though, i got a flu, and the tone of my Digitech RP100 sound card isnt very inspiring either :). Therefore, i'm not as good as i normally am... sorry for excusing myself!

Thanks for the kind words though... it's always good for a fingerstyle player to get compliments on his slap playing :D... :smack:

Well, i'll forgive you since you're a guitarist, but the Ibanez in my avatar is a fretless! :laugh2:
