semi-hollow single cut?

ginormous

Understatmentologist
I'm looking for something along these lines, maybe LP-sized, H/H or H/S/H... F-holes aren't a priority. Something that covers rock, blues and rhythm comping. I'm trying to keep it below $500 US. What do you recommend?

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

Epiphone Wildkats are discontinued...good luck finding a new one.

I just bought one this weekend used for about $360 and it does the exact styles you're talking about plus punk rock and heavy metal if you ask it nicely. In fact the reason i liked it enough to buy it is because it's fat and heavy yet defined in a similar way to my Les Paul but has a lot of differences tonally and stylistically to be a cool alternative. Plus it weighs half as much so it's good for back rests...ahahaha

So yeah. Wildkats are great. Casinos are great. Artcore by Ibanez are great.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

Love my Alleykat, would not mind having a Yamaha AES as a back up either.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

The Wildkat is still available, and not discontinued at this time, but, it has p90's.
It's Korean made.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

^ That's cosmic. When i was doing the used purchase to buy the one at my shop (that i then bought myself...ahaha) i checked my database and it came back discontinued.

Awesome guitar for the money...made in korea or not. The P90s are awesome. Using it and a Vox Night Train into a 1960A Lead cabinet I was playing Slayer's "Raining Blood" and sounding goddamn GREAT.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

Ibanez AGS 83 (that's mine in my avatar). It's bigger than LP size, so that may not work for you but they're great axes. More of a blues/rock thing going on with it than a jazz-box vibe. Great resonance and fantastic neck.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

Why single cut? You could get a hagstrom viking for around that much, and IMO they're better than any epiphone you'll find, possibly on par with elitists in sound and playability.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

There's one guitar in particular that I'm chasing, a Guild Bluesbird. Anyone know anything about them?

Constantly search DeArmond on Ebay. They're owned by Fender now. Personally, I think the 90's models when they were only under Guild were slightly better, but who knows. If you catch me on the right day, I may sell my DeArmond Starfire with USA pickups and Bigsby....but I love it.

I have two DeArmond guitars and they play and sound just about as good as any Guild out there. If I were you, I'd cherry pick a nice DeArmond, and you might just pay $250 for it.

I paid $325 for this.

$450 for this.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

Joe, I caught up to your webpage; that DeArmond M72 is right in the wheelhouse. Perhaps I should have said "chambered" instead of "semi-hollow".

I didn't have the cash at the time, but waaaaay back in the day, I actually laid my hands on an original Bluesbird. This was just after I bought a copy of Larry Carlton's album "Sleepwalk". He played a Bluesbird on one track... which was entitled "Bluesbird".

I think I see a pattern emerging here. :scratchch

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

LuLu, the eBay was a little too far out of my range, and his original listing had a Buy-It-Now of $1k American. I see that he dropped it down to 900, but nobody's moved on it.

Are there any other chambered single-cuts around that size in my price range ($500 US), new or used?

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

I played some of those Guild Bluesbirds ten years or so ago. I almost bought one. They were really good guitars. For some reason I want to think they had a Duncan Jazz/Jazz set in them.

Cort used to make a really nice copy of the PRS style semi hollow/chambered. They were damm nice guitars and built good too. The inlay was a litttle too flashy for me though. I'll see if I can't find a link to one.

Re: semi-hollow single cut?

Looks like they have done some other models with more normal inlay. The ones I used to see all had the vine inlay. I just saw this one on google image and another that had P90's and dot inlays.

The going rate on the vine inlayed ones new was around $550 and $300 on the used market. For the money, you just about can't beat em'.
