Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

For some reason I'm really GASing for another electric, and for the longest time I couldn't decide if I wanted to start shopping for something with P90s or for a semi-hollowbody. Then the light bulb went off - why not just combine the wants?

The problem is, I can think of very few guitars that fit this description. Can you guys help me make a shopping list? I'm open to buying new or used, don't mind imports if they're decent quality, and would prefer to stay under $1K.

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

My first reaction is semi hollow and phat cats.

I'm not a big fan of the Phat Cats personally, and as much as I hate swapping pickups on a semi-hollow I may have to do something along these lines.

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

Maybe I should just try to track down one of the Yamaha Troy Van Leeuwen sig models, they are pretty tasty...

The Epi Wildkat is another to check out.

Then, there's the Fender Tele style TC-90 and JA-90 with their take on the P90

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

335's with P-90's should be commonly available!

Two ideas:

Epi Riviera P-93: 335 with triple black dog-ear P-90's, Bigsby, wine red finish, gold hardware. A thing of beauty. I have one, love it. The stock PU's sound good too. The only thing I needed to change was to put on a roller bridge. Highly recommended. These go for under $500 new.

Modify an existing HH 335 to fit soap bars: It's been done by a few guys here. Minor woodworking involved, and standard P-90 height rings cover the open spaces. I picked up an Epi Dot for that, but haven't gotten to that project yet.

Swapping PU's in a 335 is easy. I've done that to several dozen F hole guitars. I've posted on some threads here about how I do it. Takes 5-10 minutes to get the pots back inside. Very easy. PM me if you need details.

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

Would consider you maybe a full hollowbody, like the Casino?

Personally, the Wildkat looks cool except for that thing on the headstock. Turns me off in a flash whenever I look at it.

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

I'd definitely be interested in something like the Casinos, I actually forgot about those so thanks! In fact I'm leaning more towards that 335-style body, that's the main reason I'm not really interested in the PRS SE model that Scott posted above.

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

Take a look at the Rondomusic.com page 14. They have a semi-hollow with P90's for a good price.

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

Some of the older Gibson ES-135's. However, those may have P-100's in them.

Yes! I know what you mean. God how I love how my brand new Sheraton II looks like. Just got it today. Alright, that's enough outta me before I derail this thread, better just start my own ;)

I actually looked at one of those in a local shop today. I was pretty interested in it until I saw the big crack at the neck joint...

Beautiful! I have an ebony Sheraton too.

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

I have an ES-135 identical to the red one that Jolly posted. The pickups have been replaced with Fralin P90s and she's a beautiful sounding and playing guitar

Re: Semi-hollowbody w/ P90s?

Yamaha TVL all the way. I had one and it was awesome!!! Get it!

Do you mind if I ask why you got rid of it? Just decide you wanted something else or was there something you didn't like about it?

I'm starting to think I might just stick with a humbucker-equipped full or semi-hollow, maybe wait for a deal on a Hamer Artist (yum), then get my P90 fix from something cheaper like one of Agile's offerings.

i'm also thinking sheraton II for my first hollow; are they full or semi, and if semi, how deep are the pickup routes? need to get my staple in there...
