Sennheiser cab mics - If 6 Was 9

Anybody have experience with BOTH the e609 and the e906? At first glance, the e906 seems to be nothing more than an e609 with a 3-position presence switch. They're both spec'd at 40-18kHz, super cardiod pattern, BUT... if you dig deeper, the e906's sensitivity is significantly higher, which tells me their is some fundamental difference. Better capsule in the e906 perhaps?

Anyway, what really matters is the sound (and the price of course, the e906 is about $80 more).

To me, the e609 is "quite a bit better than the SM57, for a little more money", which makes it a pretty good deal. But e906 is a lot more money. What's the diff? Worth spending more?

P.S. We're talking mostly live sound reinforcement here, maybe a little bit of recording.

Go with the e609. It's perfect for live sound, and has a REALLY nice lower midrange growl without getting tubby.

I compared a 609 to a 906 at AES this year, but I honestly can't remember what the 906 sounded like. I do remember that I walked away happy that I own a 609, though!

Only tried a 906 in the studio. It does sound a little rounder than the 609 for that application but in a live setting, I doubt most people would notice the difference. Both great mics, especially for the money. I bought a 609.

I would go with the 609 for live ap. You could get one on ebay easely for lower price and a 57. I have one but mine is the older black version.. not sure if theres a huge difference between the original vs the new silver one but i bought it on ebay for 75$ expecting a 609 silver but its the original e609 with double black sides. I love mine its super easy to setup and the fact that you dont have to worry about a mic stand is a big plus on stage. Takes up less space and you already know how its gonna sound rather than a 57 can be picky where and how you place it. It is also hyper cardioid which to prevent bleeding and focuses more on only your amp. The 906 is more versatile but youll more than likely never really use all the options unless your in a studio and you have time to test them and figure out which one you like best. IMO for live you want something that sounds good, is simple, quick and easy to setup with no hassles and that you know how its gonna sound right away without having to mess around with it. Thats not to say its not good for recording either, it is a great recording mic too!

If you get time check out the Shure KSM-27... they are really nice mic's.

Can't find the Shure KSM-27 searching MF or Full Compass. Details, please.

Edit: Never mind, you must mean the SM27 side-address condenser. Too pricey for my taste. 'sides, if I was going to spend $300 to mic a $500 DIY amp, I'd buy a Heil PR30.

I see Shure now offers a PG27 that's about half the cost of an SM27. Looks the same; who knows what's inside? No reviews up on MF yet, though.

The one i was referring to is "KSM27" but might be the same one you found. They are a VERY clear mic

A look at Shure's KSM page shows no KSM27. I'm betting they dropped the "K" to make it a plain "SM" when they decided to market it as being tough enough for live reinforcement, instead of a prissy studio mic.
