Series/parallel plus auto-tap at the same time?

Hi all,

Broke my left hand so I have time to obsess about mods. Curious about the possibility of a push/push that is series parallel and auto-tap as well. At the same time. I stumbled across this https://guitarelectronics.com/1-humbucker-1-volume-series-parallel-coil-tap-south/ and wondering if I run the leads from the down position (the upper two lugs that are linked) to the auto tap lug on my pickup selector if this will work.

I think this would provide:
1 down, series humbucker
1 up, parallel humbucker
2 down, South humbucker coil and middle
2 up, parallel humbucker and middle
3,4 and 5 normal configuration.

Thoughts?

Diagram looks ok........but I wish places like that would get their terminology correct. You are splitting the humbucker.......tapping is another wholly separate thing.

Will give it a shot. I fell into the split = tapped pothole too. When it’s used so often / even wrongly... you forget and do it too.

I can't believe how many people, including respected websites, that don't seem to have a clue what "tap" means.

Yep, it's a quick way of learning that someone hasn't actually wound a tap, which leads to the question of how much experience they actually have.

Also amazed how many times that real taps would be the answer but very few seem to be aware.

Admittedly they are a pain for home winders and I wish SD and Dmz and others would offer more tap options... Might increase awareness and demand .

Funny, you don't see tapped humbuckers. I imagine it has been done, but it would be a PITA to build.

Technically, a Split humbucker is a humbucker "tapped" at 50% right between the coils. Doesn't HAVE to be at 50% - but its a really handy convenient spot to tap and yields a single coil sound.....


But yeah - usually you would "tap" a coil between start and finish.

The way I define it, is that splitting is shorting a coil to ground. Tapping is attaching an output wire, and then winding more wire on the coils.

Yes it is...

However, you guys might remember me going crazy about vox coaxe pups...

Each pup has an inner coil that's much like a tapped strat, surrounded by a second coil that is also tapped.

So in one position it is both full coil and much like a p90 and in the other position both are tapped giving a tone that's more like a strat and they are always humbucking.

Tried to reproduce myself but there are too many variables and these pups are hard to find... Wish someone would mass produce

Well, actually, no!

A humbucker "tapped at 50%" would be BOTH coils with a lead wire WITHIN each coil at 50%. Thus you would essentially end up with a humbucker at 50% the total wind of each coil.

What you just suggested is "technically" a SPLIT humbucker.

...you would "tap" a coil between start and finish.

Yes, this is "tapping".
