I've got a spare OneSpot. I might use that for the AMT on its own and see if that helps, because right now, it's definitely a problem.

Well, I'm giving up on the experiment. Unsurprisingly, the Howitzer really suffers in the packing-a-punch department. That's to be expected, and overall, I found it to be excellent. I'm going to avoid saying it's built like a tank for fear of bad-pun-overload. I'll leave that to Stephen.
The failure was the AMT preamp. It was just too noisy, and I couldn't dial in an EHX Silencer I added to the mix to acceptably balance dynamics with noise floor. That being said, there were some great tones in that pedal, and it responded to drive pedals the way my actual amplifier does, but it just isn't going to work for me. Really unfortunate, because I had been looking forward to reworking my rig like this for a long time.

Would you try one of the Mooer preamps instead? The UK Gold 900 (I think it’s called) has sounded good in some of the videos I’ve seen.

That's weird that the AMT is that noisy, I haven't had that problem with mine, although, yes, they are noisy with drive pedals and high gain, but anything is. I also don't run the volume on the AMT over ~1/2 way.
The Mooer pedals are great, I've played with a few of those, they used to pop up used pretty cheap. I honestly liked them better than the preamps in my GT-1000 for high gain stuff. They are digital modelers if that matters to you, but they sound good.

Since I'm the OP, I guess I'll answer, and I'll assume that most of the thread has been read.
The short answer is no, I'm not digging it. As far as the AMT unit is concerned, I think I got a bad one, so even though I liked the tones and the feel, it just wasn't going to work with the noise level I experienced. The Howitzer could be serviceable for tiny gigs, I suppose, but there's no real oomf to it. That being said, I couldn't get a bad tone out of it.
My old Blackstar HT-5 was a lot more powerful and versatile, even at 5 watts versus 15. And my Jet City 20-watter is miles ahead of them both, but requires some volume to sound good. The JCA 50-watter I play now I modded to JCM800 specs, and it's by far the best of the bunch. It also outdid the AMT with the help of an MXR GT-OD in terms of tones. I'm willing to credit the EL34s.

The EHX unit was dead silent. Quietest amp I’ve ever played.
The hiss may have been due to the presence of the preamp in the ehx get stacked with the amt. Was it less noisy using the Drive Out of the AMT?
You might like ehx 44magnum more for omp & you definitely don't want a footswitch on these, it would give out a very loud pop each time when kicked in/out unless they wired it to work as a mute switch for the input.

When I put the AMT in the chain, I bypassed the EHX preamp and went straight into the effects return.
