Set Neck: not prob or THE DEVIL

Nerdy Nerd
I was planning on having my Scarab up and running long before this, but now that it's been marinating for this long, I'm starting to think about whether I want to do a complete refinish on it or not.

The standard business of stripping out the electronics and hardware are obvious, but I'm wondering about the set neck. I have never attempted to refinish a guitar, and I have always approached the idea of a set neck joint with much trepidation; how much of a pain will it be to reconnect? I'm not looking for a how-to, I'm asking some of you guys who do this alot. What's your process, your thoughts, and your suggestions on the process of rejoining a set neck? I'd like to get the paint OFF and get the whole thing worked up in a more contiguous color or design.

I was planning on taking the paint off with a combination of an oscillating tool with a scraping bit and some chemical strippers if it came to it. There's a big hunk of mahogany underneath so I imagine I'll be sending an order to stewmac for pore fill.

EDIT: maybe I am looking for a how-to, now that I read my own post.

I havent painted an lp but i have a neck through and i did it with the neck on ''obviously''. I would imagine you could do the same?

Re: Set Neck: not prob or THE DEVIL

well, the body is a pearl yellow that's not my cuppa, and the neck is black. It was a swap from a later Hamer with the LEDs, as the body has the electronics holes lined up in the older direction and the headstock is one of those saggy snakes and not the hockey stick I would assume would be on an 84 or 85.

If t in

he neck was set

If the neck was set in hide glue be careful. A lot of the new strippers are water based. Work fast and clean up. Wipe and dry asap.

I really dont think so. why would you do that can't you just mask off the areas you don't want to paint? Removing the neck is a big job on a set neck lol.

Well...you do have a point there. If it ain't broke, etc

If you strip the whole thing, then you can refinish with one paint type and not worry about compatibility issues. It also gives you the option to finish with whatever you choose, and with the thickness of paint you want, and then the overall colour scheme. Even black isn't easy to match, especially between old and new, and between poly and nitro.

Chemical stripper is great, or even a heat gun. The filler under poly is a bugger to remove too, but not an issue if you go solid colour.

DON'T remove the neck. Only some glues are reversible, and you're almost guaranteed not to have one of these.

Just string it up to respray. You can go rattlecan, or get some cheap guns if you have a compressor already. I just bought a 3-gun set that was about $80US or so. These have done a great job, and I've been doing a lot of spraying of nitro (and a LOT of learning at the same time its fair to say)

This is a LP Custom scratch build. Starting to look nice and shiny with some clear.

Yeah you don't want to remove the neck. Just mask off what you're not working on.and when you respray, spray the neck and body at the same time as one piece
