Seth Lover Magnet Swap

Re: Seth Lover Magnet Swap

Got the SL A2 magnets swapped out in favor of the UOA5 RC's. Left SL covers off. Had a hard time unsoldering the previous 57' Classic humbucker braided wire grounds from the back of the bridge volume pot. Had to buy a Weller solder gun for that. After installation I used a set of Ernie Ball Cobalt strings. First impression is very good, with the minor exception that next time I'll use DR Pure Nickel strings to warm the highs slightly. No dark sound from this SG whatsoever. The sound is open and clear as one would expect from an unpotted set of humbuckers. Highs aren't as rounded as they are in my 59' humbucker set with UOA5 RC's but, it could be the removal of the SL pup covers plus the Cobalt strings used. Power chords crunch with authority, balance and tightness. With the UOA5 RC magnets I get the very strong impression that Angus Young uses these magnets or an A5 variant with slightly degaussed mags for less string pull (could even be that Angus uses A5 short mags). I got the height adjustment perfect for both SL/UOA5 humbuckers such that switching between toggle positions gives an equal volume for all three positions. The middle position (both) of the toggle switch yields a composite individualistically voiced humbucker that has its own particular character. The both humbucker (middle position) is very usable on its own which isn't always the case with dual humbucker equipped guitars. Neck is woody, clear, and articulate. I prefer a magnet that when used offers a little bit of give (or dirt) when you dig in but, cleans up very nicely when played less aggressively when subtlety and nuance are required. The UOA5 RC magnet is just that magnet. As for the claim that the SL/UOA5 RC humbucker set is the "Jimmy Page Set" or "Jimmy Page was here", I wouldn't limit the tonal analogy here to Jimmy Page only. I'd say it's more of the classic rock tone which covers quite a few artists from that genre as it's more diverse.

Re: Seth Lover Magnet Swap

Just did a swap of my Seth Lover neck humbucker magnet from UOA5 RC to A3 polished, and the A3 is staying. That's how impressed I am with the UOA5 RC Bridge/A3 polished Neck magnet combo in the Seth Lover humbucker set installed in my Gibson SG 61' RI. The UOA5 RC/UOA5 RC combo was O.K. but the neck humbucker was just boomy enough to warrant the swap. The A3 neck humbucker is what my idea of a perfect neck humbucker tone is woody, vocal, open, warm but clear with nice harmonic overtones ala Billy Gibbons . The A3 has been described as vintage and sweet for which I concur. The SL A3 humbucker neck is equally at home playing leads as well as rhythm. I found myself noodling more in the neck humbucker and middle toggle positions as a result of the improved balance that the Seth Lover humbucker set displays with the A3 magnet neck.
