Seth Lover Neck With Alnico 5 Magnet?

Humbucker

Has anyone tried putting an Alnico 5 magnet in a Seth Lover neck pickup?

I've gotten really frustrated because I've been unable to find a Seymour Duncan neck humbucker that's given me the tone I want. So far I've tried a '59 neck, a '59 bridge in the neck, and a Jazz neck. I've also had a Gibson '57 Classic in the neck.

I'm looking for a hollow, nasal sounding pickup that's really sensitive to attack so you can get a bright, raspy transient when you dig in. I liked the Jazz in that it had a bright high end and none of the muddy low end that neck humbuckers often suffer from, but it wasn't at all hollow sounding and the body of the notes were still focused lower in the frequency range than I would have liked. All the pickups I've tried haven't had strong enough upper mids.

Right now it seems like my last, best hope might be a Seth Lover neck humbucker because I've read a couple of reviews that say that it can get a nice nasal, hollow sound. Also, the Seth Lover has the highest resonant peak of all the PAF style humbuckers which might mean a tone more focused in the high mids. However, I've also heard it has a pretty soft attack, being an Alnico 2 based pickup. Would swapping a Alnico 5 magnet into a Seth Lover retain the nasal, hollowness and add a more present high end without adding in a mushy low end?

Please keep your replies limited to Seymour Duncan humbuckers because I would like to return the Jazz neck I just uninstalled in order to take advantage of the 21 day exchange policy.

I'd say try a Pearly Gates neck with an A5. Very hollow sounding, and *no* overwhelming bass. It won't sound nasally, but the stock PGn will.

I'd really like to hear a A-5 Seth neck! They're just such a pain to pull apart, when they have nickel covers, that I don't even bother.

If Dr. Barlo reads this, he'll probably recommend an Antiquity humbucker...maybe with an alnico 3 magnet. He'd probably be right!

I think the Antiquity has the hollow slightly nasal sound you seem to be looking for. So does the Seth Lover but the Antiquity even more so.
