Seth Lover neck: WOW!

I've never been quite satisfied with any neck humbucker I tried... until now.

The Seth Lover is just eveything I was searching for and even more.

It's very clear but not bright, warm but not bassy. It's not boomy and never muddy under gain (moderate)... what can I say! I'm in pure tone Heaven!

It also have somewhat of a 3D tone that makes it sound very rich and deep.

Now since I was planning on changing my Super D for a PAF-type pickup, I'm very tempted to try the seth bridge, but I know I won't necessarily like the bridge as much.

What can I expect from a SH-55b? I like the 59b a lot, I find the PGb a bit bright. Still, with my Cannabis Rex being smoother, I think I may actually like the PGb with my actual setting.

I'm looking for something like the 59b but with a little more mids and not to spongy in the bass while not icepicky.

My options for now are the 59b, Sh55, PG, A2Pro. Is the voicing of all these PAFs similar? Can anyone give me a first-hand comparison in a Les Paul?

Thanks in advance.

Get that Seth bridge and swap the mag to an A8.

Everything you're asking in spades and then some.

HTH,

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

Sell the Dimarzio, and maybe something else.

Then order a Custom Shop Brobucker (I specify potted because I use covers and can't risk any squeal) A Custom 5 might sound good to you, since it's sort of a beefier 59B.

Brobucker/Seth N = done.

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

Or.....

For less than $10 you can put an A8 magnet in that '59b and get everything that you want.

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

I liked the Seth neck too. A little bit more rounded and not that scooped like the 59N. I paired my Seth neck with a Ant Bridge (more winds than a SethB) and a RCUO A5 (no cover). Thats it!

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

Brobucker is great...

But if you wanna stick to the PAF territory (Brobucker is a overwound PAF, 10K), there is a pickup in the Duncan Custom Shop line which with a small modification turns delivers a tone monster ... To me it was not beaten by any of the boutique and pricey PAF clones out there...

Am talking about Duncan Antiquity HB Bridge... Just swap its degaussed a2 with an a5 (or an a4)... Generally, they are a bit hotter than 59s, and take a5s real good...

And swapping its magnet is super easy...

that might be the case for some, but it sure aint for me.

+1 If it works for someone, great, but for me it would be by far the least useful magnet I've tried.

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

IMO, the Seth gives you back what you put into it. If your guitar is worthy, you'll get rewarded ten fold,...if it isnt, then you may see marginal returns. Great pickup no doubt.

HTH,

LtKojack - With all due respect, you seem to reco the A8 magnet swap a lot as an all around solution for most problems. Not to de-rail the OP's thread, but what tonal qualities can one expect from an A8 mag?

Why not?

The OP (Sly D) said... "I'm looking for something like the 59b but with a little more mids and not to spongy in the bass while not icepicky".

I had those same complaints about the '59 and tried several magnet swaps. When I tried the A8 it gave me exactly what I wanted, which is exactly what the OP is asking for.

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

Would you care to explain what makes you say this?

I'm all ears!

Yes, please explain. I find that the A8 is one of the most useful magnets.

It makes a Custom something that can actually be used in a guitar and sound pretty decent; it adds body and warmth to a '59 and tames that shrill high end; in some P-90s it can improve the tone dramatically; in some applications it even improves a Pearly (I know this is almost herassy); and it can actually make some import pups usable.

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

there is a hardness to the a8 that i dont care for. if i played different music i might like it for that hard edge but i dont play with all that much gain and it makes me cringe

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

That's a good point. I play classic rock and love a bit of an edge to my tone (that's why I love P-90s so much).

But I also play some soft and mellow stuff and find the '59 with A8 works great with the tone pot rolled off some.

Sly D didn't mention what type of music he plays. That could have a major bearing on our suggestions.

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

I would not install any A8s to any of my PAF kinda buckers... It simply is not for me. To me it sounds muffled and too much pushing.

Re: Seth Lover neck: WOW!

I just don't like what it does to most high quality pickups, both tone and maybe even more the feel of it. I agree with what Jeremy & Dr. Barlo said about it.

The only humbucker I've ever liked it in at all is the Screamin Demon. I have also had it in a cheap import P90 bridge, I think A5/A8, where it worked pretty well. But I'm mostly a traditional PAF/P90 kinda guy, tone-wise.
