Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

Okay, i can't decide, i want to hear your opinions on their sounds, fire away

EXTRA questions: which set sounds thicker (more bass)?, how much do the inconsistencies in the DC resistance between antiquity sets make a difference? which pickup has a warmer overdrive sound (more open, less scratchy and compressed)?

does anybody here use either set in a 335 style guitar or with the subdecay liquid sunshine or MHP 72 degrees pedals? how do they sound in these situations?

how do they sound with a classic fender tube amp?

how do they sound with an eminence rajun cajun speaker?

how do they sound with a fender super champ xd amp?

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

I had Seths in an ES-333, they sounded killer clean and just as killer with high gain - however I do not use any of the gear you listed nor have I ever used Ants. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Here's a youtube of it doing clean and gainy with less than admirable noodling skills and as cheap a recording process as possible. At the time it was just done real quick to give an idea.

By and large Ants are more open sounding with comparable output to the Seths....they just "sound" older. They've got less focus and more of a woody character.

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

The DC resistance tells you nothing.

The Antiquities have a certain "sparkle", some "life" in them that other pickups don't have. Comparing regular pickups, Seths and Ants the Seths are somewhere in between.

The Ant neck is about perfect. The Ant bridge is very honky, very 60ties rock sounding and might not be to everybody's taste. I don't remember what the Seth did there but I felt that the aggressiveness of the APH1 in the bridge might be a bit better for modern styles, but it can get too thin.

I rate Ant neck and '78 bridge as the best set for Les Pauls that I have tested so far.

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

yes I agree ... Ant Neck is more open then SL Neck.
I had both in Les Pauls.
Ant N and PGn and SLn are my favourites
- also hunting a WCR Crossroads neck.
Ok the SL neck has a woman-tone to die for - just clean it is a tad too thick.
SL N with out cover - is still in my LP with a WCR DB Br.

the Ant bridge can be too thin for as it is degaussed here I 'd prefer a 59er, PGB, SL Br , CC
or WCR DB Br. A ANT Bridge with a full loaded A2 A3 A4 A5 this shd be a killer. Some folks here did that.

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

I'm bumping this because I'm trying to decide between these two sets. They will be going into a solid body telecaster.

Any more comments on each pickup's sound? Has anyone tried any of these pickups split or in parallel?

thanx very much!

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

You're giving this to much thought. You have to take the plunge and find out for yourself. If you can easily afford them, get the Ants. If they're out of your budget get the Seths. Either way you'll have a great set of pickups. If you keep asking all you're going to get are the same answers over and over - many from guys who haven't tried either but are just regurgitating what they've read on the internet.

Read this link and make a choice: http://www.legendarytones.com/vinpicup2.html

I've seen this before and don't quite get it. The Ants are only like $10 or $15 more per pup than the Seths. If that $20-$30 for the pair makes the difference, maybe a different price point altogether should be the way to go.

BTW. I agree with Lew's overall premise. I prefered the Ants, but just pick one and fly with it.

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

cant go wrong w/ either. the ants do look better IMO, ive got the ant bridge in a solid walnut tele and it sounds just right

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

The Seth Lover is like Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker

The Antiquity is like Jedi Master Yoda.

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

I have a pair of seth lovers and they are excellent. I have never tried antiquities, but I have not read a single review that said they were less good than seths (quite the contrary in fact). With that in mind, I would agree with Lew in that if you can afford antiquities, then get them. If not, seths are great alternatives which are in the same vein.

The Antiquity is like Jedi Master Yoda.

Does that mean that the Ants will vanish from my guitar someday and I'm going to see their "ghosts" when I need tone guidance?

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

The only reason I ask is because in the UK there's a bigger price difference between the Seths and the Antiquities, converted back into dollars it works out as:

Seths - $286 (exc P+P)
Antiquities - $324 (exc P+P)

But the general feeling is that Seths are great and Antiquities are amazing?

I was considering getting the Seths just so I could hear what a PAF sounds like from brand new - I don't mind waiting 40years for the worn in sound of the Antiquities haha.

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

That's a 12% difference in price. IMHO the difference in sound and feel is much more than that.

Re: Seth lovers vs. Antiquity (humbuckers)

I have both and they sound great. But, in a 335, I prefer the Antiquity.

I run a set of Antiquitys in a Gibson 1960 Classic.
Threw a Marshall DSL 100,Fender Blues DeVille, Fender Blues Jr.
They are all different animals.. :)
I also run an Epiphone LP Custom with a JB at the bridge and a 59er at the neck..
Another whole ball of wax so to speak..
Would never part with any at this time.. :D
But my Classic LP is a great Rock and Blues Guitar.
The Eppi with the JB and 59er is a nastier sounding Rock Guitar..
For background, I am mainly into Classic Rock tones based in Blues and Blues based in Rock and Jazz..
Somehow, they all fall into the same lovely pit..
It Works.. ;)
