Flaxwood Voima With Seth Lovers set and a lipstick in the middle. (HSH)
I have it set up like strat Bridge, Bridge-middle etc.. but with a separate coil split (push pull)

1. The Bridge and neck sounds very odd split, especially the bridge.

2. The bridge unsplit and middle also have odd artifacts.

Is there a pickup genious on here that can tell whats wrong by ear? :dunno:

I appreciate any helpfull comments! :help:

In the comment section on soundcloud i have timestamped all the pickup combinations used.

Re: Seth lovers wierd sounding when split. help.

It sounds right to me. The Seth bridge is already a weak pickup, so split is going to sound ultra weak. Plus it sounds like you have the covers on there which is also contributing to the tinny sound.

If you want a fuller split sound you can remove the covers and do partial splits. Where you use either a 4k7, 6k8, or 10k resistor to shunt the cut coil.

What Clint said and i hear slight buzzing. Strings on frets or strings on poles. Either raise the action or lower the (bridge) pickup.

Thanks! The partial split is probably a good idea on these pickups. but that does not explain the the wierd artifacts when the bridge (unsplit) and middle are selected. could it be bad soldering on either the push/pull or the switch?

I think bridge full + middle sounds good! You have a really unique pup combo there and I think you're getting some unique quack with the full humbucker and lipstick. I have some bonus stuff to get your splits to sound fuller. You can put fully charged A2s in there AND add some A2 spacers:

Yeah, it doesn't sound dreadful. I'll certainly check out the link thanks!

Re: Seth lovers wierd sounding when split. help.

This guy on another forum said this:
"Sounds to me like the bridge humbucker has been (accidentally) wired to run out of phase with itself instead of splitting when in split mode, ie both coils still on but one reversed polarity.
Could also be effecting the bridge/middle positions."

Which was my suspicion.

Re: Seth lovers wierd sounding when split. help.

Tap the pole pieces of each pickup with something metal when they are split to see which coils are active in each position, if you have a nickel cover on, tap where the polepieces would be.

If you hear noise created from the tapping at equal volume on both sides, the pickup is out of phase with itself. If you hear it much louder on one side, the pickup is split.
