Seth(n)/PATB-3?? Am I nutz?!

Wow, what a forum. Everyone here is really helpful, I've been reading posts for days!

I'm replacing the pups in my Yamaha "RG" clone (RGX-421-DM). Alder body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, and a floyd trem. I'm ripping out my EMG 60n/81b metal combo and I'm aiming for a more full sound with some character to the tone. I find myself playing more blues and rock than metal these days.

From what I've read and heard via clips I like the idea of a Seth in the neck and the PATB-3 in the bridge but I'm new to the Duncan line of pups and before I pull the trigger I thought I'd post and solicit some opinions.

What do you guys think of that combo?

welcome to the forum!!

i think thats a great combo. blues used/uses the patb-3 in his trem guitars and seth lovers in his non-trem. i use a seth in the neck with a 10k antiquity in the bridge and they balance very well

I'm no expert on pups but I think that the Seth neck could be the type of pup that you are looking for. Possibly the '59 could also be a consideration. I have heard both in 335 copies and they are very nice pups. I'm not familiar with the PATB 3 so I can't comment on the combo.

I'll bet you will be changing your user name to "old2seymour" shortly...reading and participating in this forum is highly addictive !!

There are many experienced pickup gurus lurking in this forum. Hopefully they will be able to help you with your questions.

Welcome- this is one of the most informative, fun, and addicting forums around! I don't have any experience with the patb3, but the seth is one of the best ive heard.

Jeremy what kind of guitar was that Seth/Antiquity combo in?

I'm a bit confused about the Seth wiring. The description section of the Duncan site says it comes with a 4-conductor wire, the tone chart says it comes with a 1-conductor braid. Which is it?

Dave (Greco), 'tis a small world. I'm sitting in Kitch right now, and was pricing these pups at Sherwood Music this afternoon! They're expensive little buggers.....approx. $140 each.

The Tone Wizard also suggested the Pearly Gates as an option in the neck. It seems that alot of people here like them, but I felt that the Seths sounded a bit more balanced. I'm about to listen to the clips again!

I have a Seth neck, 2 conductor, with nickel cover, virtually new, that I could part with.

Hate to take business from Sherwood, but I've spent a fortune there anyways.

a strat scale ebony fingerboard alder body w/maple top

the seth sounds fatter to me than the pg which i also like. its also a single conductor unless special ordered with 4 cond wiring.

Is Greco's pup a single conductor plus ground then?

The 4-conductor includes the ground as one of the 4, how did we get a 2-conductor version?

Greco: I'm interested, check your PM. 4-conductor is not an absolute necessity.

the normal seth is single conductor, some times called 2 cond - hot wire and braided shielding for ground
the 4 conductor has 5 wires, start and finish for each coil and the bare wire ground
