setting up a hardtail

bass in this case.

i wanna tweak my new bass so i can get near perfect intonation. the neck looks pretty good (in terms of truss rod) but i still have some fret buzz (1-3) id like to eliminate and the intonation, using 12 fret harmonics, is slightly off. anyone have a site/guide, FREE resource of how i could learn to fix this sort of stuff. id assume its mostly in adjusting the saddle height, and the legnth of the saddle screw?

Re: setting up a hardtail

I like super low action. Peolpe like different string heights, I know, but this is how I do it. When I set my height I lower the saddle until it buzzes, and then keep raising and retuning until I get slight or no buzz (preferable). This is of course assuming your frets are even.

With intonation just tune to pitch, move the saddle forward to flat the string, or move it back to raise the pitch. Retune and check again. I do small incriments of adjustment because I have found if you move the saddle too far either way you will be back where you started. Depending on how well your guitar intonates, this can be a frustrating proceedure. Some times you get really close, move it a little more and it's off again. Just be patient. Do this last in the set up.
