Setting Up A LP Style Guitar For Jazz/Fusion Type Music. What P'Up?

:) I've come across a Dillion LP Style guitar (Vietnam Series it's called) that's kind of a thin bodied Lp (Actually the body is slightly thicker than an LP Double Cutaway) Very nice mahogany body/neck. Tulip Style Kluson tuners that are 18:1 and actually work quite well and the neck is to die for. Acoustically, this is a very warm sweet sounding guitar. Plugged in however, it's loud and not very detailed. These pickups, though suggested that they a modeled after some DiMarzio PAF's, they don't come close. (And I don't even like DiMarzios.)

I want to use this guitar to play modern jazz, smooth jazz and fusion style stuff (like Jeff Golub, Cheilli Minnucci, even Larry Carlton) with this piece. I'm changing all the electronics out of this thing. Going with CTS pots, Orange caps, Dixon blade type switch and I want a set of pickups that create a bluesy sting when necessary, be able to back it down and get a warm , jazzy clean and a bridge that will scream when I need it. Even thinking of setting up a Push/Pull switch to go from Humbucker to single coil sounds Not really worried about the cost-I play professionally and the body of this guitar is so nice, it's worthy of a good set of pickups. I also like playing instruments that I don't necessarily see in everyone else's hands also-I like different especially when they are hot-rodded the way I like. I've got an Ibanez AX that I installed the "Seymour Preferred" set using the SH-2 Jazz at the neck and the JB at the bridge. That works extremely well in the little AX. It's a little diffrently constructed than the more traditional Dillion LP I have so I don't know if I'll get the same result.

I'd love your oppinions/suggestions as to what you guys think would get me into the tone area I've described with this guitar. I'll be using it primarily a Carr Rambler 2x12, Fender Deluxe or my Line 6 Vetta II. What pickups do you suggest?

i would recommend an alnico II pro neck and JB bridge ... and instead of a 3 way blade, use a 5 way p-type megaswitch (or a superswitch) ... i have an all mahogany body H-H guitar with these pickups and it served me quite well when i was playing contemporary electric jazz/blues/rock fusion ... the nice thing about the pickups i mention are that when you use the #2 and #4 positions, you get very cool modern sounding tones for comping that blend nicely with keyboards or behind saxes/flute/etc ...

you didnt mention if the guitar has a maple cap ... if it does, i'd recommend the 59n and C5 bridge with the same 5 way arrangement as an alternative ... i did this on a guitar that had a thin maple cap and it too had really nice tonal varieties ... the 59n is really sweet and warm (chords or single notes) and the C5 is killer for scorching solos that cut ... they blended in the #2 and #4 very nicely too

I was gonna say A2p nec, and 59 bridge. Put in Stellar Tone tone styler tone knobs.

The neat thing about this guitar is that it doesn't seem to have a cap at all. It is one piece-carved top mahogany. Gibson had at one time manufactured a single cut Les Paul Special that was very similar in design to this guitar. Can't recall if the Paul was a Flat Top Slab or if it was carved. This Dillion is carved/arched-whatever you want to call it. The finish is natural with a light coat of lacquer on it. It almost looks like furniture grade. Pretty guitar. :)

cool

yeah, mine is solid mahogany too, no cap ... i think that gibson has made both carved top and flat top single cut all mahogany guitars ... "The Paul" was a real nice one from back in the day that i remember

If you end up not going with coil splits, I'd just go with a pair of Pearly Gates. There's plenty of tones to be found in those pickups just by twisting the voulme and tone knobs. If you do go with the 5 way P type (great idea, BTW), I'd go with a APHn in the neck and a Screamin Demon in the bridge. Lots of variety to be found in that set up.

there's a few that could get you there, in this instance i would think the deciding factors will be the guitar, and personal taste. all the suggestions you've had are good

i'd suggest a phat cat neck and demon in the bridge.

I am quite pleased with the Jazz-n/Demon-b combindation. I would also recommend being able to split (at least) the Jazz. The combo of Demon in series-HB + Jazz-slug coil is really sweet. I'm using triple shot rings for both pickups. Be sure to measure your string spacing at the bridge pole pieces so that you can decide whether standard or trembucker spacing is a better match for your guitar. Using d'Addario Jazz Chrome 11s will give you a jazzier, more Carlton-like tone.

Well, I wound up going with an SH-2 Jazz Neck, (Zebra to blend with the natural Mahagony finish and creme trim rings, pickguard/truss cover) I also purchased an SH-14 Custom 5 (Zebra also) for the bridge. These 2 pickups really get me where I want to be tone wise. I find that I really love the jazz for comping but it's also very clean and articulate fast, jazz passages (especially on clean arpeggio motifs) That custom five will absolutely scream!! Great overtones too. I can get a really thick metal type sound through my dual rec Mesa when I darken the tone control. Very versatile combination. Thanks to my guy Darren Riley in Raleigh, NC for having everything on hand. (And a super sweet deal on the slightly used Custom 5) Nothing like saving a buck when you can. :)

All mahogany LP style guitar?

It screams P-Rails to me. All the Fusion you can ask and then some.
