Setup for a southern rock gig

I am auditioning for a southern rock gig. I am thinking Les Paul Traditional, Marshall 100 wt 1x12 Combo and for effects I am a little torn. Thoughts are MXR Dist+, Reverb, Rotary Sim, Vol\Wah and Tuner. I was also thinking about slapping the Carbon Copy on the board. I have never done a country or southern rock gig I don't want to walk in there looking like Joe Guitar-hero. Too much, just enough?

Got no skin in the game, but do the opposite of the impression of the lifestyle - Go Dry!

LP/Marshall maybe booster/dist. I don't think the CC would be too frowned upon.

Skynyrd, Gov't Mule and Allman Bros, to my knowledge, kept it pure, guitar straight into the amp. Black Crowes too

Les Paul + Marshall is perfect. Get your distortion from the amp. Clean up with the guitar volume. Optionally use an OD for solo boost.

This plus a wha pedal. Southern rock is all about picking dynamics and the guitar volume control. Extra dirt and a wha can be essential on occasion so add them too.

The above opinions are good for the style.. but I'll add one tidbit.. Look at what is in the song repitiore. If the any of the songs may have any effects, make sure sure you got that covered. ?? The style is mostly dry, but they do sometimes use wah or something. If skynyrd, take a slide... FREEBIRD!!!!!

And don't forget the Jack Daniels!! haha

What kind of space are you auditioning in.?
Do you have something smaller...like a 15-20 watt amp.

Take your board man. The guys from Blackberry Smoke use some effects and they're definitely a southern rock band.

Warren Haynes and Rich Robinson from the Crowes also have pretty large boards also. I typically don't travel with my big board, too heavy. Once I get the gig I will move in the big gear.

What kind of space are you auditioning in.?
Do you have something smaller...like a 15-20 watt amp.

They have a rehearsal spot setup. I have a Fender Excelsior 13 wt. amp. I use the Marshall for auditions because it has a 60/100 watt switch. I would rather have the headroom and not need it than getting buried by a loud drummer and bassist.

Wah, phaser or rotary, and delay. If you're getting all your dirt from the amp that's all I'd take. Oh and a slide.

This is where simple is better, IME and IMO. Guitar in to the amp. Maybe a wah and def have a slide handy. If you want a little more drive from the amp, a booster or OD to hit the front a little more.

Honestly depends on what the band is going for and what they want to hear. Did they give you a audition song? Did they give you some of their songs if they have originals? I say keep it simple but bring what you need to make you comfortable. Wah, Slide, and Drive should be enough to get by with but I would be more focused on my actual playing and licks and material if I were you.

Actually use what you're comfortable with. Southern rock is just a sub-genre. Its more of an attitude in your playing than anything.

Old school type effects might be the ticket here if you want to use them. Leslie/Echoplex,Fuzz/OD

This may sound crazy - but take whatever effects that you need for the songs you are playing.

Freebird? Better have a phaser...just one example.

But - in general; Be able to

- Clean twangy sound
- Clean plus a little phase/chorus
- Grit (NOT Dirt!!!), something where you dig in and get bite
- Something to get a FAT lead
- Good solid distortion sound that can vary w/ Volume.

I'd go with Wah, OD for Boost, Phaser, Delay. But see the first sentence.

If they are weighing your gear as a factor either bring it all or disclose up front all you have. My bet is putting on a display of your range of play is important because while you want to stay in the pocket during most of the jams you need to set yourself apart from anyone else they might have in mind. If you are way past their minimum expectations what will count lots is personality ........music is only fun with fun and happy people!

If you have more than one guitar,take a single coil guitar and a humbucker style guitar.

Dont worry about effects. Have an amp that can do clean and mean tones, or an amp the sounds good clean and use a good plexi like pedal.

Southern Rock bands in the past used Marshall,Peavey,Fender. Ive saw Molly Hatchet and one of the guitar players was using an Ampeg stack. Just use what you have and let your actual playing get you the job. In theory your playing should stand out with what ever gear you are using as long as it is of decent quality. You dont need boutique either.

This is going of the beat track, but i heard a GREAT Southern Rock-like band using only Les Pauls and 5150 II / 6505's.
(...no effects other thatn wah's)

The bass player had a massive Mesa bass amp.

And they sounded bloody fantastic !!!
