I put a 59 set into a Michael Kelly Patriot. The bridge pup had a nice PAF sound to it however, the neck pup was so boomy that I just couldn't get along with it. I used SD's exchange policy and got the HotRodded set, it seemed to be a better fit for me. A lot of guys have said that they have the boomyness with the 59 neck but some don't. I think it's just based on each individual guitar.

I have a couple '59 sets. On some guitars, most often LP's, they can sometimes be boomy in the neck, and that's cured by raising the pole pieces and lowering the PU, especially on the bass side. Reduces the boominess and you have a great, clear PU.

Picky tonal assumptions aside, they will blow away the stock pickups. After all they were designed for a 60's Gibson type guitar.

I had a '59 in the bridge of an Epiphone Les Paul many years ago and the pickup was outstanding. It did rock, classic metal, and cleans, both picked and strummed, beautifully. It is darn near a perfect pickup. I never had one for the neck. My favorite neck pickups for a Les Paul are the Antiquity, A2P, and Dimarzio EJ out of the aftermarket pickups I've used.

Welcome to the Forum. What tone goals do you have in mind? What artist would you like to emulate? What amp do you run? What do you not like about what's in there now?
There are so many outstanding choices that SD makes, it's difficult to choose where to start.
For instance, do you love Slash's tone? Then put an Alnico 2 Pro in. I happen to favor the Alnico 2 Pro neck and a Custom Custom bridge in a Les Paul. I also like the Seth Lovers and Antiquties, but they are not the same tone as the A2P set.
So, expand a bit on what you're trying to do and we are more than happy to chime in our two cents!

If you have a Les Paul and you're not sure, a set of '59s are the best pickups to start off with. Lots of people here, including myself, advocate swapping magnets to fine-tune the EQ and response of the pickup and the 59 wind is very nice with any magnet... just different. There are many threads in this forum dealing with that and sites that explain the process and it's EASY. Basically, if I had a '59 set with a balanced Les Paul guitar like this one, I'd put an Alnico 4 in the neck and an Alnico 8 in the bridge. A4 gives less bass, more balanced EQ overall and were used very often by Gibson in the late 50's. An A8 will punch the mids and output and ease up the high end a bit. Same pickup winds, totally different animals... the neck will be just as vintagy but with more balance and the bridge will rock your socks off but retain the clarity of the PAF wind.

many use and like the 59s in both positions.. Actually covers alot of ground. I run 59 models in the neck of several guitars and dig em. (like hotter pups in the bridge) In most applications, I run 59bridge models in the neck so I can get alittle more "smoky" blues tone.

There is alot more to Slashes tone then an A2P. I don't like his tone , but I adore the A2P in the bridge. Just something to consider.

When i played in the Merseybeat era, i could only afford a Antoria and Watkins amps that was in 1961, i saved all the money from my gigs and got Fender Strat and a Vox Ac 30,that was in 1963, i now have the Strat, my latest Guitars are An American special Tele with Texas Special, that sounds great, i got the chance to buy a Epiphone LP Custom Heritage cherry which is great looking Guitar but the pick ups are not very good, hence my post, i play all there through a Fender Blues Jnr for small gigs, I use the Hot Rod Deville 212 for larger venues.
I am a Dinosaur of the 60's, lol
