Seymour Duncan 78 Custom Shop set for a Les Paul

I have been in the fence about my 57 Classic and Plus set in my Signature T for a while now.
I am considering the 78 set, before I drop $300 though, has anyone heard these in a Lester?
I'm not really looking for EVH tone but I like that hot low output but hot articulate paf tone on the first VH albums.
I'm concerned about the neck as well. I am looking for more of an AP2 type of neck sound.
I like a lot of mids in the bridge and buttery smooth with no mud in the neck.
I'll be playing classic rock and blues rock thru an EVH 5150iii.

I'll also be ripping the circuit board out and replacing everything with Bourns pots Russian PIO caps and 50s style wiring as I do on every Les Paul I buy.

Thanks!

I've only heard the EVH in a Super Strat, but if you are concerned about dropping that kind of $, you may consider the the Slash neck. For the bridge, I like a 59 or a Pearly Gates for more high end. Keep in mind that I've never heard an LP do VH perfectly, and that his sound has much much more to do with many other components. Any slighly hot PAF-type would probably work, with maybe a little more highs to compensate for the thicker LP sound.

There are some clips on YOUTUBE of a '78 in an LP and it sounds really nice; clear and articulate w/o being muddy or shrill. You may have to search for a bit but I know there are a few.

I appreciate the help, Money is not really a concern for me. I get pretty much what I want within reason.
I'd rather just order the matched set and be done with it. I am guessing that the neck will probably have that AP2 or Slash type of neck tone.
I'm not really chasing an EVH tone, I try to sound like me, whatever that is lol!
I am in this love affair with low output PAFs at the moment. I love how they let guitars breath and notes blossom and open up.
That and a good crunch is what I am after, from the videos I have watched the bridge has the attack of a single coil and the growl of a PAF.
I'm in a quandry with this Les Paul. I am in a total love hate with these 57s, a Classic and a Plus in the bridge.
I have to adjust my amp for the guitar which my others I don't have to do that. My other guitars sound great thru my EVH. The 57s wanna get muddy but when I adjust my amp I love them.
I've always bought off the shelf pickups and been satisfied, I just wanna go custom shop this time.

I'll do some more research, Thanks!

It really doesn't sound much like EVH, but I've heard a '78 bridge in an LP and it smokes.

- The magic tone you're describing is Seth's. One of the world's best PAF's, and I'd wager you'd like them more than '78's.

- I have, and have had, a number of PAF's; '57 Classics are easily the worst sounding ones I've played (and at $150 retail, there's no excuse for the dull high-end and muddy tones).

The Seths are always an awesome choice with LPs, but you also may want to contact the Custom Shop and see what they recommend. They always have surprising insights on tonal quandaries. They may suggest something they already make, or build you something from scratch.

From everything I have read this setup in a Les Paul is phenomenal! The neck pickup is like an AP2 on steroids and the bridge just smokes like you said.

I am gonna drop the dime on these very soon. I'll do a full report when I get it all together.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Seymour Duncan 78 Custom Shop set for a Les Paul

FWIW, I had an LP with a Seth in the neck and a '78 in the bridge - killer!

I'm not familiar with the '78 neck, but you'll have no problem with the bridge.

Looking forward to your review!
