Normally i really don't like the appearance of the actives but this one is cool :)

I don't think many people got to try the Retribution either since it was 7-string only.

I'd love to give this one a try. Love Dino's tone.

Man, that guitar tho... that bridge pickup is like a mile away from the bridge, LOL. It's almost a middle pickup.

Here's an interesting question, and I'm hoping this might yield the answer I'm looking for...

Since this is a bridge pickup, I'm curious to know if you could use one as a neck pickup - kinda like an EMG 81, or how you can chose to use either a ceramic or Alnico Blackout or Fishman Fluence Modern in either position...

I ask because I've been anxious for this to come out for a while now, and would love to load my newest toy with a set of these...

Well, you *could* use it as a neck pickup, but it is pretty high output, so balance with a bridge pickup might be an issue, as well as compression of the input stage of the amp being a problem.

This could be solved somewhat by dropping the height of the neck pickup right? I'm just trying to understand how this would work in comparison to - for example, using either a DiMarzio X2N as a neck pickup or in comparison to any other active as a neck pickup (when using the same pickup in the bridge...)...

Dropping the neck pickup too far causes other issues with the sound- the attack goes away. And by that point, there are better ways to get the sound you want without having to compromise.

I don't know what it is about actives, but I find the ones intended for the bridge sound at the very least usable in the neck position. 81 and 85 as an example. I don't think that's the case for passives. I think it may have to do with how EMG's preamp dumps out a whole bunch of bottom end and high-end, which helps homogenize the response a bit, whereas passives don't.

I personally wouldn't recommend an X2N if you want your neck position to sound... like... even remotely usable in the context of both positions, LOL. But I'm no Paul Gilbert either.
