Seymour Duncan Black Winter Pickups

Hi, I'm looking for a suitable guitar in which I can replace the standard set of pups with Seymour Duncan Black Winter Pickups. I currently own an Epiphone SG400 Pro, which I like and might use as the base for the pickups. However it would be nice to use a slightly more "metal" guitar around a similar price point instead. Does anyone have any recommendations? Not too fussed about the electronics or brand, since the electronics will be replaced. Just a sub-£350 guitar which has a nice neck and is routed for a humbucker in the bridge.

If you already have the SG, I would start with that. SG's are plenty metal enough in my view.

I love them in a LP, I honestly think they'd sound great in a SG. I think SG's are metal, but if you're set on changing, there are a lot of good guitars in that range, it's hard to go wrong. Jackson and Ibanez make good ones for that price that aren't SG or LP-like so much and will have slimmer necks and I really like them. I have a Jackson V from that range that I love to play, it just feels good, so what if it isn't top of the line? Feels and sounds great and that's what matters. I played a really cheap Ibanez for 10 years and didn't know it was cheap. It played so well that I didn't even bother looking it up until much later. The Shecter Omen 6 is popular though I really like the LTD Eclipse line if I were to be picking one. But that gets you right back to the heavier LP style, though I'm not sure if that's what you're trying to avoid or just looking for something that looks a bit more modern metal.

Have you played other brands that you might favor more than others?

Sub 350 quid, ibanez SZ is killer guitar for the money.
Mahogany body, Maple neck, Rosewood board, 22 frets, Set neck, MIK and they’re really well made.
Ibanez RG550 can be found in that region if you don’t mind one that has some wear.
I love the PRS SE stuff but it’s hard to find them in that range.

I've had them in several of my guitars. Right now they're in an import Jackson King V with basswood wings. Picked it up used at GC several years ago for like $250 or $300. So far, it's my favorite. I think basswood works well with the crisp top end of the BWs. Same wood I like to use with Dimebuckers, for the same reason.

A Basswood Ibanez RG would also be a good candidate, imho.

I agree..the SG is pretty metal, and the Black Winters sound great in them...

To add to the chorus, the SG is plenty metal for the Winter set. If for some reason that doesn't appeal to you, I second Semetery's suggestion of both the Schecter Omen (the Extreme, in particular) and LTD EC lines. There's also the good old Schecter Hellraiser (in its passive form) and a bunch of good affordable axes from Jackson's X and Pro lines. But really, the SG should be fine. The Winters are a very versatile pickup set that will sound good in many different guitars.
