Seymour DUncan BlackBacks?

I have seen these pickups advertised to come on some boutique, hand built guitars. I hear they use a rare Neo Dimium magnet, and that they are now made in Seymour Duncan's custom shop. I saw it here http://edromanguitars.com/parts/blackback.htm
Anyone have any experience with these? I think I'm gonna be ordering a QuickSilver guitar with a Solid Black Korina Body. The BlackBacks come with these guitars.

Yeah, i believe they're special order...
*cough* Custom Custom (bridge) *cough* Jazz (neck) *cough*

What ed roman wants to do with SD pickups and a sharpie marker is his own buisness. There aren't many good things said about that man.

I have no comment on the man, but I ahve heard that the black backs were CC/Jazz as well. But do to contractual stuff, nobody from Seymour Duncan is allowed to comment on it.

Neodymium magnets are very very strong and are most commonly used in computer hard-drives.

i had heard fender was supposed to use some very small neodymium magnets in pickus built for them by maybe bill lawrence? i can't remember where i read that. it sounds like it would be bad to me but oh well i guess i will just stay here and use my "vintage" sounding pickups cause i like the sound of them.

PS don't listen to ed roman for anything

LSR Guitars/Black Back pickups
Thanks for your interest in the Seymour Duncan pickups. We are supplying pickups on an OEM basis to LSR Guitars (a/k/a Ed Roman Guitars) located in New Fairfield, CT, along with a limited number of brands that are either built for Ed Roman Guitars or are distributed by Ed Roman Guitars. These brands include LSR Guitars, David T. McNaught Guitars, Gary Jacobs Guitars, Gledura Guitars, Jaros Guitars, and Jet Guitars. Each brand uses a proprietary pickup design called Black Backs which is built to Ed Roman's specification. If you want more information on the Black Back pickups or guitars, please check out their website at

Most people that have bad things to say about Ed Roman are people that never dealt with him. Most people that I've had contact with, that have bought guitars from him, say that the guitars are fantastic. Seams like he's really opinionated about certain brands. And that pisses people off. I dont care what his opinions are, even though I agree with most of the stuff he says at his website. Have you seen the guitars he sells? JET, Gledura, Jaros, QuickSilver, etc,...Those guitars do things in the building process that big companies wont touch, because of cost reasons. Seams to me that these guitars are the cream of the crop when it comes to innovation, design, and build quality. I've spoke with Ed Roman a couple of days ago. He was nice to me. He answered all of my stupid questions, and even recommended a couple of other cheaper guitars than the one I asked about, for what I was looking for. Does anyone have any experience with the BlackBacks? From what I gather about what S.D. says in the FAQ,...I doubt they are just a CC/Jazz.

I have a JB and a Pearly Gates that I bought new from a Seymour Duncan Dealer in the mid 1980's, and they both have Black backplates, unlike the Silver on the newer one's. Mine weren't special order, I think they just came that way back then.

please dont bad mouth ed roman, hes not here to defend himself, and id prefer it stay that way. he is very opinionated and i dont agree with much of what he says but he has his opinion and he is entitled to it, as are the rest of us.

as far as the black backs go, carrot is right. nobody at duncan can talk about them but there are a few people here who have tried them and put a meter to them.

Hi Jeremy. I just put a meter on the old one's I mentioned in my previous post, and they read the same as new one's. The PG reads about 8.2K, and the JB around 16K. I don't think there is anything special about the one's I have, I don't hear any difference between them and new SD Pickups. Any idea why these came with Black Backplates??? I bought em both from the same SD Dealer, sometime in the early 1980's. I have another JB from about the same period, from the same Dealer, and it has a Silver backplate. Just curious. Thanks. :)

are these ed roman black backs or just some duncans that you have with black back plates? to be honest i dont know much about the ed roman ones, ive played a few guitars with them and they were ok but i havent had a chance to really spent much time with em and have never seem em out of a guitar

Well, I've never dealt with Ed Roman, so I'd say these just happened to come with Black Backplates. They seem to be regular SD Pickups. They've been goin strong for over 20 years, so that is something for all at SD to be proud of !!! They are terriffic, as are all SD Pickups, but they aren't "special". They are just good, toneful Duncan's, as usual. Thanks !!!

Duncans used to come that way, yours are not the same as the Ed Roman's we are talking about. Although I suspect the retro Duncan look inspired his.

No, Fender now produces Samarium Cobalt pickups, a Bill Lawrence design. Sound incredible ! Really nice!

Fender starts to collaborate more and more these days, they asked Bill Lawrence to design the new pickups, and Ted Weber to design the new '57 Twin amp speakers... I like that. Not many companies are smart enough to start collaborating with others instead of doing all their way.

Hey Tattooed Carrot, I suspect you are correct !!! I think some of the older Duncans just came this way, also.

Re: Seymour DUncan BlackBacks?

As far as I can tell from my experience with them, all they are is a Custom 5 bridge and 59 neck with a black baseplate. The neodymium nonsense came about because their original name was Black/Back ND. ND stands for "Nondisclosure", but people thought it was short for neodymium. Unless you have an acrylic guitar it makes no discernible difference, the black baseplates are just a throwback to older SD pickups.

But here in the future, they aren't exactly common anymore.

Wow! Resurrecting by responding to one of the oldest threads of the forum... over thirteen years!

I'm entertaining a lot of puns includind the word "necro", but I'll spare the good folk of the SDGUF. ;)
