Seymour Duncan brand bass guitar (?) Need help identifying.

I just picked up this bass guitar at a junk shop. The headstock indicates the manufacturer as Seymour Duncan, although I have my doubts. Not sure of the weight but it's one of the heaviest basses I've ever picked up. (Ash?) Previous owner felt compelled to abuse the bass and started removing the paint on the face of the guitar, maybe using a grinder as the wood is gouged. The horror.
If anyone can shed some light on this bass, I would appreciate it! I've tried internet search and can't seem to find any links regarding instruments made by S. Duncan company.
Is the bass really made by S. Duncan? Approximate year? Thanks in advance.

Re: Seymour Duncan brand bass guitar (?) Need help identifying.

I own a strat with Quarter Pound pickups, virtually mint.
Yes, they are real and fantastic instruments. I can't believe
the deals the good Doctor has posted, get one if you can but
Validate the pickups have not been changed.
Matt had a red one, mine is vintage white with rosewood board

Yikes! The red one has issues - check the pic of the strings going down the neck, they're over the edge!

Best of the bunch appears to be #2, the purplish one, but it needs a fretjob.

Pretty sure the string is loose, its not straight under tension. It looks unwound/ loose. Why? i dont know.

Those were made in Japan by ESP, who also happens to be SD's Japanese distributor. For the most part, they're very high quality instruments.

Thanks for the replies- It makes perfect sense that it's ESP built because I know the bass came from Japan. In a collection of other assorted items. And yes, it certainly feels/looks like a quality built guitar. I'm looking forward to getting a few bugs worked out of the bass and hear it sing. And figure out what to do about the finish. Maybe strip it to bare wood and go with a light stain and oil. We'll see. Thanks again!

I'd leave it as-is - coulda belonged to somebody worth a damn in Japan. Or you could at least say it did

I love the ones hanging around SD HQ. Really want to track one down for myself some day.
