Seymour Duncan humbucker string spacing

Anyone got a tips how to get it to line up better with the strings? Have already bent the leg alitle and put some foam in to try and push it to the wound strings maybe there is a better way? Is Duncan humbucker smaller then standard gibson buckers cause the gibson's I have had in line up perfectly.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbucker string spacing

For the record I have also tried a trembucker in this guitar and then the strings did not line up at all it was a complete mess lol

Re: Seymour Duncan humbucker string spacing

There is no need for them to line up with the centre of the pole......nor has that ever been an abiding historical design criteria......nor is it a functional/performance requirement for the pickup.

And additionally, that pic quite clearly shows that the strings are as well lined up as it can be....

If your OCD overwhelms your commonsense then simply notch the bridge saddles so they sit over the geometric centre.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbucker string spacing

Ocd is strong in me I know, I posted similar thread like this before hehe.

But why does Duncan make smaller strings spacing?

I guess you didn't notice that certain models of Gibson p'ups have different polepiece spreads?

FYI, the 490R, 496R, Classic '57, Classic '57 Plus, Burstbucker #1, #2 and #3 all are 49.2mm ONLY.

OTOH, the 490T and the 498T are 52mm.

All Duncan SH p'ups, sold as either neck and/or bridge are 49.2mm.

All Duncan Trembucker p'ups are 52.5mm.

Due to the shape and projection of the magnetic field, even if the polepieces don't perfectly align, there isn't any technical reason to prefer one over the other. OCD is bad for you.

HTH,

Interesting thanks for those measurements it helps allot.

Even if the strings is outside of the polepiece it will not make a difference?

Not with the bridge p'up.

OTOH, the neck p'up is another story. If you play clean, having the poles set at the right height with each string is paramount to get the best possible tone and minimize the inherent volume differencies between strings, specially with the newest "Balanced Tension" string sets on the market.

It's called "Polepiece stagger".

Re: Seymour Duncan humbucker string spacing

Google the magnetic flux lines in a pickup.....and you'll see why even having the poles nowhere near the strings is mostly unimportant.

Then take a look at a vintage strat....which has 3 same spaced pickups. These are the same vintage strats that people are holding up as grail tone.

Even on an old Gibson, an abr spacing is typically wider than the 49.2mm PAF pickup spacing. Then the neck has the same spacing for a much narrower string spread. Yet again a grail tone.

I googled it and can see that magnetic field go far beoynd the polepiece thank you for this.

Good points on the tones, and yea I have seen a couple of great strats with specially the neck pickup with the strings not aligning over the polepieces at all but sounds great.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbucker string spacing

As a contrary argument, you can actually get circumstances where the low or high E can be affected......and be lower volume by comparison. This affect is probably what lead EVH to turn his PAF on an angle.....so at least 1 coil had those strings covered.
The typical Floyd spacing, or some of the strat spacings can need a wider pole. But there is no hardtail Gibson I know of that suffers this.
