Seymour Duncan Hyperion

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

Have you been adjusting the pickup height? You might find a sweet spot. I have the hss prestige and the notch position sounds pretty good to me.

Btw I really like the humbucker for rock but it doesn't sound nearly as powerful for metal as my custom uoa5 which would have similar output as you wrote. Wire gauge difference? Amazing clarity on the hyperion though.

I only played a AZ2402 prestige in a store so didn’t adjust anything. Maybe the wire gauge is different?, the clarity of the Hyperion is great indeed. Might also have been the titanium saddles i didnt like

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

I picked this up (flamed brown topaz premium) at samash a couple days ago. I was like cool a strat ibanez, I never see these. I was shocked. Right away it was super resonant. One of the best strats I've played, and I didn't even plug it in. I was shocked to see it had a basswood body. It's either amazing basswood, the neck, and/or the maple top that's making it so resonant and make the harmonics jump out.

Plugged in, it didn't wow me which is rare for literally one of the best unplugged guitars if not the best one I've played. The hyperion pickups didn't sound bad, but I'm insanely picky with strats. I don't like traditional sounds. I have a mij squier with eric johnson pickups, and I kind of gravitate more towards the low output pafs I guess. The humbucker in the ibanez az I really didn't like. It was way too hot for me.

I've only bought one new guitar in my life. This ibanez really has me wondering if I should grab it. The only thing is it's 1350, and I'd swap out the pickups. I'd rather have s/s/s, but I'd probably put in eric johnsons and a jb4. At that price, I start thinking about custom shop strats since I've never played one before, and I'd rather pay a little more to have something I loved out of the box just to be sure. Who knows, maybe I'll find an indonesian or mexican I love playing just as much. That strat was pretty special to make me think about buying it though since I thought my next big buy would prob be a traditional lp around the 1500 range since I'm starting to get really picky about the guitars I buy since I have way too many atm. I'd love to try eric johnson's new sig guitar, but I've never seen any eric johnson strat in person.

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

Sounds like you need to take a moment to think about your needs in a guitar. Do you want an LP? A strat? Do you actually need another guitar right now?

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

Wait for the 2019 Ibanez AZ range. They may make some with SSS pickup config and 22-fret version with low-output PAF style pickups. The way it goes there is always new and better very soon after I buy.

Ugh for me I wish the bridge was just a tad higher output. I'm jelling with it better now that I started just cranking the gain up on my kemper though

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

I bought a Tequilla sunrise gradation, and I'm surpriced by the pups. I usually play a Stratocaster, so it's great to get that full bark from the Hyperions. I think they have a very full pure sound.IMG_0108.jpg

Well, golly! Look at that guitar! Can you compare the pickups to any pickups you know really well?

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

That's a great looking guitar right there!

So cool that big, bright colors are coming back into popularity

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

PS didn't mention it here but since it's become the main Hyperion thread, for future googlers: an a8 in the bridge really gave it more balls and easier pinch harmonics. Definitely a good pup for mag swaps.

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

@Mincer Actually not. The sound is so different from my usual Strat, but it's a very defined midtone bark, if I can call it that. It fit's my Marshall SL 5 very well.

@Masta´C. Thank you. I really like the way it looks too.

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

...it seems pretty low power compared to pickups normally marketed to metal players...
The AZ series is not marketed to metal players, it's marketed to pretty much everyone else, but it can do metal, at least in my opinion, you just need to adjust your amp / overdrive / boost and turn up what needs to be turned up, depending on what you're using.

I got the AZ2402 Prestige, and I'm really loving it.
The pickups remind me a LOT of the PRS 59/09's, but with the "power tap" modes and in between (positions 2/4) selections being surprisingly useable.
I typically like it when guitars come with a 4 conductor wire humbucker with some kind of push/pull/switch tap solution, although I tend to not use it very much, but I definitely see myself using the "power tap" a LOT more in the future in comparison.

Anyway, like I said, in terms of it being able to pull off chugs and sick metal leads / rhythms, it can do that, and again it reminds me a lot of my Custom 24...which I love to use for modern metal tones.

Although...I was thinking about maybe going to the SD custom shop and asking for a new version of the bridge pickup, and just have a tad bit more output to it, but keep everything else the same.
I suppose I could replace it with a Pegasus, but then I'd probably lose the power tap features right?
Or is the "power tap" all in the wiring, and any 4 conductor wire humbucker will continue to work with it?

Curious to know the answer to that.

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

Before I removed all my hyperion hardware and pickups I tried out my Suhr Aldrich on its own using the hyperion system. It sounded BETTER split than the hyperion bridge did. I don’t think there’s any magic going on with the hyperions despite the marketing hype.

Since you have HH you will be able to keep the hyperion wiring as it will have 4 solderable areas on the pcb for each humbucker.

You can call SD and see what they think, but rather than going custom shop you could just choose your poison and wire it in. Basically the higher the output, the better the split imo.

As for your quoted comment of mine from before, I totally knew it wasn’t marketed as a metal guitar. I just meant that the stock pickups would not satisfy a metal player. I got the guitar because the roasted neck and ss frets, alder body and locking tuners, with a stratty look is exactly what I wanted. I figured from the get-go that I would probably need to swap some pups. My aldrich/ fast track 1 / satch track 1 meets my personal needs, so after some tweaking it’s the best guitar for me

Re: Seymour Duncan Hyperion

It's a partial tap.

Well, a tap doesn't specify how much the pickup is tapped...they are *all* partial taps. Like a tapped Quarter Pound, it is tapped partially through the winding. It doesn't have a special name because of it.

Partial split I meant.

Thanks so much! This is great info. The aldrich are a little too ballsy for my tastes, I think I'm going to try a Pegasus tho for sure.
And yeah I figured you knew it wasn't marketed as a metal guitar but just clarifying for everyone else who is unfamiliar with the AZ ~_*

Very nice guitar. I'm intrigued by them. Would like to add one to my collection. It has a roasted maple neck, am I correct?
