im switching EMGs with passive pickups in my bc rich v nj deluxe. im going with dimarzio super distortion for the neck pickup and im interested in the invader or the x2n for the bridge. i play doom metal and death metal. has anyone tried this combo and which do you think i should choose?

Re: seymour duncan invader or dimarzio x2n

Doom and death metal are pretty far apart in terms of tone. When I think 'doomy', I hear sludgy, slow, kinda-mushy tone. Death metal is pretty tight, isn't it? X2N is tight. Invader is not. I'm leaning towards the X2N as it's easier to dial IN mud than it is to dial it OUT, you know?

i know they are far apart, the super distortion a is for the doom type of sound

I'm having a hard time understanding the use of a super distortion as a neck pickup.

I think you're much better off with something like an EVO or the PAF..

I think the x2n is better suited for the bridge too, the invader is balls out and hard to back off from since it's so raw.

The Super D can be a great neck pup in a bright guitar, provided the bridge pup is crazy hot. In fact, I just pulled an X2N/Super D combo out of one of my guitars. It wasn't bad, I just can't leave well enough alone.

Death metal huh?

X2N = Chuck Schuldiner and Death
Invader = Nile

I've used both pickups and loved them equally. I would just look around and see which one you can find the best deal on and go for that. Both will serve you well.

I have looked around and i couldnt find a better deal for any of them

Re: seymour duncan invader or dimarzio x2n

I like both pickups and both pickups are in my guitars/hands crunchy and tight. the x2n is brighter though, the invader smoother.

X2N and try a Super 2 in the neck instead of the Super D, its just as hot but designed for the neck.

Re: seymour duncan invader or dimarzio x2n

The super 2 is very diferent it has more treble and a lot less bass. and i want bass

Re: seymour duncan invader or dimarzio x2n

Well some say that Dime used a Super Distortion in the neck and Dean even had many Dime guitars with the Super D. And now the Dean Dime sig neck pickup is very close in spec so there is no reason why it wouldn't make a good neck pickup. Michael J Romeo from Symphony X uses X2N in the bridge and ToneZone in the neck.

I have the X2N-7 in my 7-string baritone and it's very tight, awesome pickup. I haven't played the Invader but have heard that it's very good for those kinds of music OP described.

Neck pickups have a lot of bass by virtue of where they sample the string. You'll have plenty of bass with a Super 2. If you put a super d in the neck the bass will be overwhelming and muddy. If you've already tried it and like it, thats your ears, but if you havent done the order yet, trust me, go Super 2.

Neither.

Get a D-Activator X neck/bridge set and call it a day. Perfectly matched and amazing for death metal.
