Seymour Duncan SH-4 wiring issue

I have a dual humbucker guitar with one volume knob, one tone knob and a 3-way selector switch. I decided to change the bridge pickup (a TJ Jones Ltd, as is the neck one) for a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB.

After removing the old bridge pickup, I connected the new one in the same way (i.e. to the selector switch) following the wiring guide on the Seymour Duncan website: black = live; green + bare = solder together for earth; red + white = solder together and tape off.

After doing this and testing the new pickup I immediately noticed that the output was quieter when the the selector switch was in the middle position. After Googling this issue it seemed to be that the pickups were "out of phase". I didn't know if this was due to the two pickups being of different brands (note: on the TJ Jones pickup the white wire is the live one), or if there was some other reason for it.

In another forum someone told me that I could reverse the phasing by either switching the green and black wires or flipping the magnet. As I didn't want to make a mess by un/resoldering I decided to flip the magnet, following the instructions on the SD website and a Youtube video I found.

Managed to do this okay, but now there seems to be another issue. The bridge pickup seems kind of hummy and when I touch one of its pole pieces (especially an outer one) it buzzes. If I touch one while I have my thumb on the tail piece it doesn't buzz. This doesn't happen with the neck pickup.

Is this likely to be a grounding issue or something else and how could I fix it?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH-4 wiring issue

Just flipping the mag won't create that kind of problem. Check your wiring, you may have a poor ground connection somewhere.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't think flipping the magnet would have been the solution. I would reverse the black and green wires, or reverse the wires on the neck pickup.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I may have to resolder everything again.

So flipping the magnet and reversing the black and green wires does not produce the same outcome? I was unsure about this.

Any confirmation on this? I don't know if to reflip the magnet and rewire the black & green wires (would be less hassle if I didn't have to do this) or just check the ground. Thanks.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH-4 wiring issue

Well, it could be 2 separate issues: the buzzing (make sure grounds are soldered correctly) and phase (put magnet back to normal, and reverse black & green). These are some of the problems that can occur with different pickup brands- they can certainly be overcome, but can be frustrating in the process.
