Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

EVH himself talked about using a Ibanez Destroyer in the studio, which came stock with Super 70s! He just didn't specifically talk about (or likely know) about the pickup!

EVH had to borrow a Destroyer for the next record after he destroyed his with a chainsaw ("Shark" guitar).

So no, NOT an internet rumor.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

I was talking about the super 70 pickup not the destroyer, even in early interviews Ed never talked about super 70s pickup,he did talk about gibson, seymour duncan, dimarzio.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

Ed, so you wouldnt go with the custom SH5.

Pittbull,I still like the way the custom pulls off VH1 tones. i just posted marks clip to show that there are a few pu's that will do the VH 1 tone.I prefer the duncan custom for a overall tone but its really more the amp than anything. if you have a old marshall tweaked a dsd or a custom will be fine. the rest is in your hands at that point

Destroyers from that time period had Super 70s. He doesn't have to talk about the pickups in the guitar to have used them! He even mentions later models (when they changed to ceramic pickups) not sounding right, and that's why he stopped using them. Dismissing his use of them as an internet rumor is disingenuous. No, it's not the pickup from the whammy parts, but entire songs didn't have that guitar at all...

He's also said he didn't use the guitar with the Mighty Mite/Super Distortion in the studio because it sounded too harsh.

He's changed his story about what he used when a number of times, but the Destroyer for all non-whammy parts is consistent, and Blackie Lawless has confirmed the tale about Eddie borrowing his Destroyer after the Shark incident.

Pragmatically, what he used doesn't really matter. Few of the people chasing his tone are using a Plexi modded with a Variac dropping the voltage to 90V! What matters is what will get the tone you want from your setup.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

Ed didnt talk about the ibanez pickups changing to ceamic magnets,Ed talked about the wood Ibanez used,Ed thought that Ibanez used korina wood for the destoyer but they were made out of ash,Ed had no idea,Ed thought that since ibanez changed the wood he didnt like the guitar anymore. They were never made out of korina wood they were always ash.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

I wasn't saying he said anything about ceramic pickups and the Destroyer, though I see how it could be read that way. I mentioned them because the later Destroyers definitely changed pickups, where wood changes are less easily confirmed and the sites mentioning that don't back it with reliable sources. [Korina confusion seems to have been caused by a finish change.]

In any case, he didn't like later Destroyers...

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

There are photos of Ed using ceramic pickups, dimarzio super distotion, black and yellow striped strat, the fair warning strat, the original frankie(cream colored)also mighty mite(cream colored) in the bridge postion destroyer.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

Live he used a LOT of different guitars. Even in the studio, he messed with different guitars, and I haven't run across breakdowns of that aside from particular songs like "Little Guitars", until 1984.

But he also had guitars in photoshoots that he claimed he didn't use in the studio. He also got pissed off with Seymour Duncan after the EVH pickup ad incident, which is when he started with the misdirection.

Guitars he wasn't happy with changed pickups a lot, but weren't his studio mainstays.

He didn't start swapping pickups in the Destroyer until after Sharking it. He spent a while fighting with pickup changes to try to get the Shark back, but he was never happy with it. Unlikely to be a tone people are chasing...

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

didnt see the earlier posts, and i dont listen to VH so my bad on that one

but im guessing he used a lot of distortion or overdrive and once its at a certain level, i love the sound of the sh 11

but again i dont know how much drive he used, and im really not familiar with him at all

Re: Seymour Duncan SH5 vs. Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom

The custom custom doesnt have the crisp edge crunch thats on the Van halen 1 sound. That is probably due to the alnico II magnet.I think the Duncan Custom sh-5(ceramic) should achieve that.

yes to get as close to that tone as possible the SH-5 is by far the better choice than the SH-11. Plus the SH-5 custom is just a killer pup period! i am even buying one to have in one guitar again cause i miss it's pissed off PAF tone that no other model gets.
