Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

How do you guys think the Tony Iommi pup (about 19-20k output) will sound in the bridge of an ash strat paired up with a pair of APS-1 pups, using 250k pots. Will it be too bright? Anyone know what to expect?

Re: Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

too bright? not at all. if anything the ti will be dark with 250k pots. and probably way overpower the aps singles unless its really low.

which ti pup, the gibson?

Re: Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

I believe Tony runs one of his pups in a strat with 1m pots, could be wrong

Re: Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

Yeah, I would never think of Iommi's tone as bright in any era and I couldn't imagine it being bright with a 250K volume.

Re: Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

When we did the Iommi pickup for Tony's signature Patrick Eggle guitar in the mid-90s, we were trying to get as much output into the pickup as possible. It should be anything but bright.

Re: Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

What would you guys recommend getting, maybe something more along the lines like an APH-1 or Pearly Gates? I'm going to have it wired like an American Deluxe strat with the S-1 switch. I need a bucker to complement the APS-1's when split, any thoughts? Looking for something that'll sound vintage and screaming

Re: Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

custom custom is a great pickup in strats. Plenty of grunt in series mode and will be pretty close to the a2ps when its split.

Re: Seymour Duncan Tony Iommi and Alnico Pro 2

That would be the TB-11? What's the difference with the TB-14?
TB-11 is the Custom Custom which has an AlNiCo II magnet in it.

TB-14 is the Custom 5, which has an AlNiCo V magnet in it.

The only physical difference difference is the magnet as the coils are the same (also as the TB-5 Custom, which has a Ceramic magnet).

The tonal differences, though, are that the Custom Custom is midrangey with a softer treble and looser bass response while the Custom 5 has a flatter midrange response with enhanced treble and bass.

I have a hardtail Ash Strat and the Custom Custom that I have in the bridge of it is perfect.

The TB-11 looks good! A pearly gates plus might be nice too but may be troublesome to find for a decent price in Holland

I installed the Iommi pickup for a friend once. Not bright at all; actually muddy as hell. Kinda buzzy and unpleasant sounding at high gain, too. I don't get it because I've seen Iommi live on four occasions over the past 25 years (not to mention I play in a band that does a Sabbath tribute show) and his tone is astounding; it's a sound that nobody has ever managed to record. But that signature pickup just sounded bad to me. And that's plugged into my rack with thousands of $$$ worth of Engl in it.

Did Iommi ever use much rack gear? I always felt like his tone was basically straight into an amp that's turned up loud with not as much gain as you'd think.

Yup... Laneys, to be specific. I don't try to duplicate his equipment. That's not the point, anyway. The point is that the pickup was muddy and kinda buzzy sounding, plugged into very expensive high-end amplification. The guy I installed it for didn't like it with his rig, either.

It probably works really well with Iommi's rig, but that's only good if you're duplicating his rig as well as the guitar.

I'm trying to find clips of the Iommi pickup but... Oddly, I can't after a few minutes of googling around. I'm sure I could if I dug deeper, but I'm unfortunately at work on my day off. D'oh!

Strangely, his main guitar doesn't use that pickup; it's a pickup that was custom wound for him at the time the guitar was made back in the 70s. I suppose his signature sgs use it, but I don't know firsthand.

I think his signature SGs used a Gibson-designed Iommi pickup. The pickup in the OP was designed when Iommi had a signature Patrick Eggle guitar.
