This is just a fun little test I came up with, just a bunch of stuff I learned on the SD forum. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong on any of the subjects. After a while I will post the answers.

A - Scavenger Hunt

1- Which coil did BachtoRock use for the slug on the original 59/Custom Hybrid? And what magnet did he use?
2 - What SD thread has the most pages as of now?
3 - What was "The Tele Project" and how long did it take from start to finish?

B - Pickup Trivia
1 - What is the only style of pickup to have commonly used an A6?
2 - What magnet is said to be Lindy Fralin's favorite?
3 - What is a slutbucker?
4 - What aftermarket pickup company has the most non custom shop models?
5 - For pickups are made from the same wind. The Custom, The Custom Custom, The Custom 5, and one more. What is the 4th?

I think most people still know it as the JB/Jazz set. the hot rodded humbucker set doesn't appear to be trademarked or copyrighted, so there's still time for Larry to take it. I'm busy this week, or I'd take it myself. I wonder what Larry would pay to buy it from me if I beat him to it. think he'd pay as much if I also took the mayhem set name too.

Yes I was referring to "The JB Model" (you are actually the person I first heard about it from) and I am refering to the standard production JB as of current. And also, yes the pickups were put in Jeff Beck's guitar. But Seymour took the pickups used to make those from a different guitar. I guess that is kind of a poor question though, because the pickups he took and the ones he ended up with were nothing alike. He completely rewound them and replaced the magnets as well.

I believe Fralin prefers A4 magnets.

6 - People never thought that a double cream bobbin 59/custom hybrid could be made into production because of two patents. One of these patents doesn't actualy apply to this pickup, the other does. What are these two patents and who owns the rights to them?

It's not actually a patent but a trademark owned by DiMarzio. Patents will expire after 25 years I believe, allowing other companies to enter the market with their variations. Trademarks never expire and unless DMZ freely gives up their trademark, double cream pickups will never be available to those of us who prefer any other pickup company's products.

5 - What is the name of the active Jazz/JB set?

It is the Dave Mustaine Livewire set.

2 - What was the first humbucker to ever be in EVH's Frankenstrat?

It was a Gibson PAF pickup that he pulled out of his 335. He potted the pickup in paraffin wax to reduce feedback. This was later replaced by an SD humbucker.

4 - Who was the guitar player who famously slashed the cone in their amp to get a distorted sound?

Dave Davies of The Kinks was the one who slash the speaker cone for the recording of "You Really Got Me". Willie Kizart infamously used a speaker cone filled with newspaper on Rocket 88 after his amp was damaged in transport.

6 - Did Alice Cooper really bite the head of a chicken in a concert?

Cooper did not actually bite the head off a chicken. He was playing a festival, his set being between John Lennon and The Doors. During the concert, somebody threw a chicken on stage. Cooper said that due to his lack of knowledge about chickens and such figured that because the chicken had wings and was a bird, it should fly. He threw it into the crowd who then tore the bird apart and threw the carcass back onstage. Alice also said that the first few rows where the chicken landed were all people in wheelchairs and that they were the ones to kill the chicken.

E - Miscellaneous
1 - What was different about Leo Fender's concept for what is now known as Esquires than what he actually sold?

The prototype was made of pine, featured a slanted control plate, did not have a selector switch, and the pickguard did not extend underneath the strings, much like the Cabronita Telecaster pickguard.

do you mean 'The JB Model'?

a) yes, I do
b) that's was a late-70s production model.
c) MJ has the specs.


from my experience, a new custom shop model won't get that close to a 30+ year old pickup. the Antiquity JB is a better bet and more affordable...maybe even more affordable on eBay or Reverb. or....be patient and wait for an original The JB Model to show up online.

Just as a side note, my question about Jimi's strat is a legitimate question and the only one who's answer I do not actually know. Any inut on that would be appreciated.

Dunno if it's the Monterey Strat(thought it was smashed,but who knows?),but the Zappas(Frank/Dweez) had one of Jimis...

The Monetery strat was torched. Jimi was going to smash it, but one of the guys before him got to it first.

I think its pretty well documented that Jimi gave the remains of the Monterrey Strat to Frank Zappa. he tittied it up with a series of modifications in the 70's. I remember him talking about it in interviews
