59s to be exact. This experience had taught me that: 1) Covered humbuckers look good in a modern, shred-y guitar 2) 59s can pull off virtually anything when it comes to distortion / overdrive. The cleans are still amazing.
An old pic from around '81 or '82, playing my Heritage Standard-80. Its unpotted Shaw PAFs were unusable at stage volume.
I installed a set of zebra 59s and rocked it happily for years until a roadie knocked it over and broke the headstock.
Got the neck repaired very nicely but it was never as lively after that.
