just wondering what pickup combo in a standard sg you feel nails the angus tone, right now i have a set of 59,s no covers, pretty close, replaced the 498 stock, also tried the gibson angus pickup, thought it nailed his lead tone but a little too thin for rythem

Are you also playing through a Marshall SL(1959/1987) or JTM 45 type amp? His gear is pretty sparce, but his guitar and amp combo are key...Not sure on the pickups? Angus has quite a few SGs?

Re: sg angus tone

I believe Angus used to use dual Gibson 57 Classics. He now has his own Gibson model pickup, too. Dual 57 Classics or a 57 Classic in the neck with the Angus Young Signiture in the bridge should do the trick (in an SG, of course).

Re: sg angus tone

I own an Angus Young model which I used in an LP and I think it nails his feel and tone as far as pups go.

I also think the 59 would do the trick. The custom 5 is a tad too sweet to seal the deal.

I have seen a few pros use Marshalls and an amp brand called ARD. Buckcherry played a local club with Ards and the whole tone mixed with Marshalls was a rockin' AC/DC type grind.

Hmm didn't he use the master volume jmps?

Re: sg angus tone

The pickups in Angus 60's SG are alnico 5 Gibsons. The 59B would be very very similar. In Angus old guitar, both pickups would measure about the same DC resistance: about 8.2K. A pair of 59B's (one in the neck and one in the bridge position) would nail that tone...but I'd prefer a 59N and 59B. The 59N is slightly underwound compared to the 59B for a clearer, less muddy tone when playing rythym. Lew

I still think that he use/used mastervolume jmps, At least in the eighties?

I've only seen articles that showed all 4 input Marshalls (NMV)....Malcolm also has some Wizard amps...

Both brothers don't play with alot of gain and the Plexi series would nail Angus's lead tone...Angus tends to have a tone that is a bit fatter or beefier overall....Malcolm's tone is slightly brighter with a touch less gain....Both of these guys have some of my favorite Marshall tones...The intro to "Highway To Hell" is classic Plexi Marshall tone!

Re: sg angus tone

I get some great Angus-like tones out of my SG with Phat Cats. I don't think Angus ever used P-90 equipped SGs, but still.. I'm surprised sometimes at how AC/DC my axe sounds.. mabe the Cats just fall right between the Angus tone and the Malcolm Gretsch tone... Like a one man Young Bros... hehe...
