SG Classic getting its due.

Just ordered 2 Antiquity P-90's for the SG from proaudioland. I also have this coming from Steve@TundraTone any day.

TundraTone SG Harness

The stock SG just has a super hot and muddy p-90 tone. Not at all like my bestfriends 1962 Classic White SG special. I assume the fact that gibson has 1 P-90 and does not calibrate a set. Then you get 300K Linear Pots that can wander +/- 30% in tolerance...

You can get a great feeling and resonate SG with no neck dive...like mine...and just struggle with clarity and adjusting height for proper usable outputs.

After this I may do tone pros button tuners, a aluminum tail and nashville to ABR conversion posts too...setup with 10-52 strings...and then ill just play.

Dude just wants a proper set of pickups and usable controls...more clarity please.

Guitar in Question...Tail has been top wrapped for a better bridge angle with the tail screwed down tight. currently has EXP110's otherwise its dead stock.

oddly enough this one has a real harness and no PCB based harness.

2 8.4k stock A5 P-90s meh.

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

I have one of those too, bone stock. I get along fine with the stock P-90's. One change I did make was in the wiring, and that was doing the 50's mod to the tone pot hookups. It made a noticeable difference to my ears.

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

Sweet man, glad you'll get what you want. Both my P90s are at 7.5k so I probably don't have the dark neck issues like you. Man.... my neck pickup is nice and dark though but I wouldn't make it any darker... I'm sure your neck pup is muddy as all heck. Congrats on the new pups though. The antiquities don't balance very well but they are a bit better than the Gibsons and they sound pretty good. :)

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

I should also note that I dont bond with the attack of A5 mags. I'm stoked for the dunaged A2 mags in these.

spongy bass FTW!

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

Here is the damn cause of me wanting to change the stock Classic.

1962 classic white all original wraptail SG Special.

My best friends Grandma bought this in 1962 for herself to learn on. He got it when he showed a interest in learning the instrument.

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

That is a gorgeous special. I love white SG's (as you can tell from my Jr in my avatar).

I don't know if I'd get along with A2 P-90's. I like the spank and snarl I can get with the A5 models. Even the Lollar in my Jr. is A5 and that thing can go from sweet goodness to flamethrower...lol. The Jr. has 500k pots wired 50's style as well.

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

I love hearing about the best vintage spec pickups being installed. It's like the religion of tone. There's pickups marketed for music styles, which is cool, but pickups designed for pure tone are the ones I like the most.

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

On mine, I swapped the stock pots with RS Guitarworks super pots, and that cleaned up the muddiness it had when stock. I like the stock pickups just fine. Mine's a 2005 SG Classic, if that matters...

They must have switched back? Mine is a 2010 and it just has std pots and everything....

+1. After my experiences with A2's in Phat Cats, I just don't see those as working well in P-90's...there's better alincos to use, especially with the big selection Addition FX has. A neck P-90 with A2's and 300K's is going to be a 'treble-free zone', unless it's very underwound.

Re: SG Classic getting its due.

Very nice. Looks like it's going to be an even better tone machine. One of these is next on my list.
